 FAIRMOUNT PARK - RIVERSIDE |
This is Riverside's second largest universally accessible playground that caters to all types of children. The Fairmount Park playground was built in collaboration with Shane's Inspiration, a nonprofit group that helps with design, fundraising programs that encourage able-bodied kids to play with their disabled peers.
As reported in Alicia Robinson's article "Fairmount carousel Playground accessible to all" (Press Enterprise, June 17 2010), the brightly colored carousel theme custom play equipment can accommodate a wheelchair, a clock toy has Braille numbers alongside numerals, and various levers to press, wheels to turn and drums to beat make an array of noise that is a delight to children.
There are many custom features on this play structure: the rain stick, the distortion mirror and the ferris wheel climber, just to name a few... The park originally contained a carousel in the 20's, which was the theme for this new design. This is the oldest park in the history of Riverside.
Here is Emily Johnson Kronland, a park-goer, comment on Fairmount Park:
Fairmount playground's groundbreaking universally accessible custom features are also emphasized in the Press enterprise article "Americans with Disabilities Act celebrates two decades" (July 25, 2010). |

BOX CANYON - YORBA LINDA |
|
This is the newest universally accessible playground in Yorba Linda (the previously existing park was destroyed in the October 2008 Freeway Complex Fire). The castle and ship design of the play equipment was chosen by the city residents. The ship is for 2-5 year olds, and the castle is for 6-12 year olds. Both are ramped making it easily accessible for everyone. The playground includes many interactive panels including music chimes, drums, and gears to spin. There are 4 belt seats swings and 2 baby full bucket swings.
The Box Canyon playground garnered great reviews by park-goers as featured in Lisa's article (North County Parks Reporter) on June 21, 2010 - the Fun Orange County Parks Website "Accessible Playground for All Pirates and Knights".
This is THE most accessible playground I've visited. Not only are there ramps up to the play structures, a kid-sized wheelchair can actually navigate around the structures with big loops to make around the walkways (no backing up). There are even bridges to cross! |
