The Annual Meeting of the Congregation of The House of Hope Presbyterian Church will be held on Sunday, February 13, at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary, for the purposes of receiving reports for 2010 and approving clergy terms of call. |

February 13 is Macalester Sunday, the day we celebrate our historic relationship with Macalester College, whose founder and first president was historian and educator Edward Duffield Neill, the founder of The House of Hope. Edward Duffield Neill worked as Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Minnesota Territory in 1851-53, and as chancellor of the state university in 1858-61. During the Civil War he served as an army and a hospital chaplain. He served in the administrations of Presidents Lincoln, Johnson and Grant. He was the president of Macalester College from 1873 to 1874, as well as professor of history and literature. Worship on February 13 will begin with the sound of the bagpipes, and service music will be provided by the Macalester College Concert Choir under the direction of Eugene Rogers. Eily Marlow, Lilly Program Associate at the college, will be the preacher of the day. Macalester President Brian Rosenberg will bring greetings from the college. Offering Ourselves
Stewardship is everyone's opportunity to express their faith by making an annual financial commitment to the church. The exciting capital campaign is raising funds for the much-needed repair and updating of the church facilities; it does not cover operating expenses. Please make your annual stewardship pledge in January to support the overall and ongoing mission of the church, and all of the wonderful programs that are regularly highlighted in the newsletter and church bulletins. We can be proud of the good work this church accomplishes within these walls and out in the world, all supported by our annual gifts. |

JANUARY IN THE CLOISTER GALLERY
Jewish Women's
Artists' Circle
Tikkun: Repair is an exhibit of the Jewish Women Artists' Circle, a group of Jewish artists in the Twin Cities. In modern Judaism, the concept of tikkun, which literally means "repair," connotes healing, wellness, wholeness, justice and compassion. The Jewish Women Artists' Circle was founded in 2005, initially funded by a grant from Rimon, the Minnesota Jewish Arts Council, an initiative of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation. The artists are diverse in age and Jewish backgrounds. They work in varied media, both two- and three-dimensional, often putting together materials and ideas in unique and interesting ways. A vital component of their group is study. For each exhibit, they select a spiritual theme and they hold study sessions with community scholars. The exhibit artists are Sandra Baron, Jane Bassuk, Rachel Breen, Sandra Brick, Gloria Cooper, Lucy Rose Fischer, Bette Globus Goodman, Natalie Halpern (Eichen), Rani Halpern, Barbara Boko Kvasnick-Nunez, Joyce Lyon, Lynda Monick-Isenberg, Aimee Orkin, Paula Leiter Pergament, Dianne Silverman, Sharon Stillman, and Anita White. SOCK IT TO US!
"Sock It To Us!" is a sock drive for Project Home during the cold, wet winter months. The Youth of House of Hope will be in Kirk Parlour each Sunday from January 23 to March 27 collecting socks for those who are homeless. Please bring new socks for children and adults of all ages and help us keep our neighbors' feet warm and dry.

BAPTISM CLASSES
February 13 and March 6
New or prospective parents interested in Baptism may attend one of the baptism classes which are taught by the clergy staff. These classes will provide parents the information they need to understand the sacrament and its purpose, and will be another way for the church to offer support and encouragement to families. It will also be a chance to meet other families who have children of similar ages. Each class will include the opportunity to tour the nursery and meet some of the nursery staff, as well as to ask questions. Classes will be held on Sundays, February 13 and March 6, at 9 a.m. in the Church Library. Baptism is a Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA). The Baptism of children witnesses to the truth that God's love claims people before they are able to respond in faith. Please call Michelle Freyholtz at 651-223-7556 to schedule your baby's baptism and to register for the class. Baptisms are ordinarily celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of the month. .

 House of Hope member Mary Westra will speak at the KIRK CLUB brunch on Sunday, February 13, at 12:30 p.m. at the Lexington Restaurant in St. Paul (on Grand at Lexington). Mary will talk about her recently published memoir, After the Murder of My Son. The cost of brunch is $13.78 and up, including tax and tip. GREAT DECISIONS FEBRUARY 15
The Great Decisions program begins Tuesday, February 15, at 7 p.m. in the Church Library, with the topic "Rebuilding Haiti" presented by Ed Lord. Ed Lord helped set up and coordinate a hospital team after the Haiti earthquake and has followed events there closely. He is an expert in coordinating responses to natural disasters, largely in the medical field. He also consults with governments in preparations for dealing with the effects of weapons of mass destruction, including acting as senior advisor to the FBI counterintelligence staff in Washington, D.C.Great Decisions is a program of discussions focusing on U.S. Foreign Policy issues. It is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association and administered here in Minnesota by the Minnesota International Center. Briefing books are available in the church office. The enrollment fee is $45, unchanged from last year. The fee supports speaker honoraria and the cost of the briefing book. Payment of a fee is NOT required but we highly recommend it to make the program self supporting. One fee covers a single person or a couple. FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN
February 17
January 12 was the one-year anniversary of the Haiti earthquake, a somber reminder of the suffering and hunger in our world, and a reminder that we are called by Christ to help our neighbors. On Thursday, February 17, from 8 to 9:30 p.m., The House of Hope has reserved 30 spots for voulnteers to pack meals at Feed My Starving Children. This is a great opportunity for House of Hope members (and their friends) of all ages to come together to provide relief for some of the world's neediest children. Please join us at the FMSC facility, 990 Lone Oak Rd, Suite 160, in Eagan. To register, send an e-mail message to hohvolunteers@gmail.com. Indicate the date for which you are registering, the name of each volunteer and whether an adult or under 18 years of age. Please provide e-mail addresses for adults. at Women's Advocates

WOMEN'S ADVOCATES shelter for battered women serves nearly 1,000 women and children a year. A group of volunteers under the leadership of House of Hope member Liz Boyd gathers every Third Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the shelter. They do a craft project or play bingo with the women and children, and then provide a treat for them. There is a montly service opportunity for parents and small children at the Presbyterian Homes of Roseville. At 9:45 a.m. on the third Friday of each month, parents and children gather to interact informally with senior adults. Children will begin to learn about service and compassion, and the seniors will be very happy to have young visitors. Woodwind Quintet
On Sunday, February 20, the Music at Four Series continues with a performance by the Pavia Woodwind Quintet, known as one of the most exciting new ensembles in the Twin Cities. Their concert will be presented in the Kirk Parlour and will feature romantic and contemporary works for woodwind quintet and piano. The quintet is made up of flutist Emily Sapa, Gina Monge on French horn, bassoonist Justin Windschitl, clarinetist Ryan Golden, and oboist Sarah Carmack, who is also a former member of The House of Hope. Please join us in the Kirk Parlour at 4 p.m. for an exciting afternoon of music. This concert is free and open to the public.

House of Hope women of all ages and various backgrounds enjoy dinner, stimulating discussion, friendship and fellowship. The evening begins with a social time at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the speaker's presentation. The evening ends at approximately 8:30 p.m. Hear another House of Hope woman reflect on her Monday-Saturday experience. Talk together about how our faith works throughout daily life. Our Tuesday, February 22, meeting is at the Meeting House (761 Summit Avenue). You can get to the Meeting House back door from the Portland parking lot if you prefer to park there, or park on Summit Avenue and enter the front door. Cost is $25 per person for a meal and related expenses. House of Hope's Joann Lee will be our February speaker. ATTENTION SKIERS!
Ski Outing February 27
The House of Hope Youth group invites you to a ski outing at Afton Alps on Sunday February 27. All members are welcome; you can also invite your friends. Departure is planned for 11:30 a.m. and the main group will return around 5:30 p.m. (You may stay longer if you have your own transportation.) Special group rates are available: full day lift tickets are $33 for adults (18-61); $29 for ages 6-17 and 62 and over. Ski and snowboard rentals are $25 all ages. Helmets are $4. Beginner lessons are $4 (must register in advance). All youth attending without parents will need a House of Hope permission slip. Lunch is not provided, so please bring your own or bring money for food at the chalet. Lent Begins March 8
Our Lenten journey begins on Ash Wednesday, March 9, with a worship service and Holy Communion at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Tom Forster-Smith will preach and the Motet Choir and Choir School ensembles will provide the service music. Child care will be provided in Room 2. Lent is a season of penance and reflection which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. In the ancient Judeo-Christian tradition, ashes are a symbol of mourning and penance. We are marked with ashes to remind us of our mortality, our human failings, and our need of God's forgiveness.
