First-Ever House of Hope Garden Tour July 18
GARDEN TOUR. Mark your calendars and plan to attend the first-ever House of Hope garden tour. Ten House of Hope families from St. Paul and southern suburbs will open their gardens for the tour on Sunday, July 18, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $10 per person or $20 per household, with funds dedicated for benevolence. We hope this will be another way for us to enjoy our beautiful summer weather and to get to know our fellow church members. Tickets, in the form of a brochure for self-guided tours, will be available after the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, July 11.

A Celebration of Faith & Writing October 2, 2010

House of Hope's second Celebration of Faith & Writing ("Seeing Through Words") will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010. This day-long event will feature writers Azar Nafisi, Billy Collins (former poet laureate of the U.S.), and Clyde Edgerton (Walking Across Egypt), as well as Andrew Hudgins, Jennifer Maier and James Calvin Schaap. Summer Carillon Recital Series Begins July 4

The 2010 Summer Carillon Recital Series continues Sunday, July 11, at 4 p.m. with a recital by Jonathan Lehrer (New York, New York). Jonathan began his carillon study in 2000 at Yale University and graduated from Yale with a degree in Mathematics. He became a Carillonneur member of the GCNA in 2006 and is a graduate of the Belgian Royal Carillon School 'Jef Denyn.' Jon has played frequent recitals at Frederick, Maryland and Arlington Cemetery, Virginia, and has performed worldwide. In 2008-2009 he performed the Cast in Bronze theatrical carillon show on the Mobile Millennium Carillon across the country. He last performed at House of Hope in 2007. Carillon recitals can be heard from the church lawns. Bring a blanket or chair, your family and friends, and a picnic lunch to enjoy while you listen to the lovely sounds of the Noyes Memorial Carillon. If weather proves uncooperative, there are always comfortable locations inside where the recitals can be heard. Other recital dates in the series: July 11, 18, 25 and August 1.

July in the Cloister Gallery Doug Nielsen
Doug Nielsen has been in the art and picture framing business for 33 years. As an artist, he has studied the work of the masters, old and current, with special interest in the American Impressionists of the late 1800's to the 1930's.

August in the Cloister Gallery: Member Retrospective
In August, church members will have the opportunity to display up to 3 pieces of art that they have previously shown in the Gallery. Please bring your artwork to the Bridal Room before or after the church service on July 25. Pieces should be picked up on Sunday, August 29. The General Assembly of the PC(USA) meets in Minneapolis Through July 10
THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PC(USA) is meeting in Minneapolis July 3-10, 2010, for the first time in over 25 years. The assembly consists of elected representatives of all the presbyteries in the denomination. The assembly seeks to protect our church from errors in faith and practice, and is responsible for assuring that the expression of our theology remains true to the biblical standards in our historic confessions. The General Assembly presents a witness for truth and justice in our community and in the world community. It sets priorities for the church and establishes relationships with other churches or ecumenical bodies.

Behind the Scenes Tour July 11
Go behind the Scenes with the Capital Campaign Steering Committee on Sundays, July 11 and August 8. Immediately following the worship service, gather at the Welcome Center by the Cloister Art Gallery. Doug Wakefield will lead tours of the Bell Tower, the Basement and interesting points in between. The tour will provide an up-close and personal look at some of the potential areas of renovation being considered as part of our Capital Campaign.

"Taking Root" Meeting July 15
The Deacons' Community Service Committee has endorsed House of Hope's participation in the Minnesota Council of Churches' "Taking Root" program. Be part of a mixed Muslim-Christian sponsorship team to welcome an immigrant family to the Twin Cities. For a four-month period, teams help a refugee or a refugee family become self-sufficient member/s of the community, with the full support and direction of the Council of Churches staff. Faith Float July 17
Members of The House of Hope are invited to participate in the 2010 Faith Float as part of the Rondo Days parade on Saturday, July 17. The float will be decorated that morning, starting at 9 a.m. If anyone is interested in decorating, contact Terri McNeil at 651-699-9896 or tmcneil003@yahoo.com. Anyone interested in singing, either riding on or walking alongside the float, is asked to arrive at St. Peter Claver Church by 9:30 a.m. There will be someone at the church directing people to the float's location. This is open to anyone who wants to sing; they don't have to be in a choir. If possible, we are hoping people will join in the Rondo Day festivities at the Martin Luther King Center after the parade. This is the third year that a group of churches has organized the Faith Float and it's a wonderful time!

Freedom School Dinner July 29
Kwanzaa Community Church in North Minneapolis provides Afro-centric reading enrichment and cultural education through its Freedom School each summer. The students, who are in grade school and high school, are given breakfast and lunch five days a week during the six-week program. For many of the kids, these are the only meals available to them for the day. House of Hope will provide and serve a chicken dinner for the 65-75 students and their families on Thursday, July 29. Set-up begins at 4:30 p.m.; dinner and the program begin at 6 at 3700 Bryant Avenue N. If you can help, contact Mary Cardinal Peterson at petecardfive@q.com or 651-341-7173. If you can't help on July 29, donations of breakfast, lunch and snack foods as well as Cub and Sam's Club gift cards are greatly appreciated. Bring food donations to church any Sunday in July and leave them in the "Kwanzaa" boxes at the table outside of the chapel.

Holy Communion August 1
The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated at the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, August 1. In the Presbyterian Church (USA) all baptized persons, including children, are invited to participate in the sacrament. The elements served will be bread and grape juice. Gluten free wafers will be available.

National Night Out August 3
House of Hope again will host a neighborhood National Night Out event on August 3 in the Portland Avenue parking lot and park. Set-up starts at 4 p.m., clean-up begins at 9. Sherwood Pomeroy will be at the grill, Bonnie Alton will whip up PBandJ sandwiches, the Ericksons will bring their Photo Booth, and Sheltered Reality will provide music. Volunteers are needed for set-up, activities, hosting, clean-up, and more. Donations of store-bought* cakes for the cake walk, cupcakes and bars will be accepted Sunday, August 1, before and after worship; in the church office on August 2 and 3; and at the event itself. Come out and meet the neighbors and make this a safe neighborhood for all who live, work, worship and play here. House of Hope on Home Tour
Mark your
calendar for the September 12 Summit Hill Home Tour, from 1 to 5 p.m.
The House of Hope Church and Manse will be part of the tour. We are in
need of 8 volunteers, 4 each for 2 hours--at the church entrance,
Cloister Gallery, Sanctuary, and Kirk Parlour, to act as hosts. We will
provide brief scripts which will offer information about the church and
