Through June 6 in the Cloister Gallery
Paintings by Joshua Cunningham"My primary pursuit has become painting the landscape, but really it is a foil for an endless variety of light and subject. The light is always fleeting and I find myself defending the painting against mercurial skies and the constant march of the sun. The world rotates with the same speed at noon as it does at sunset, and so it isn't long before I am painting from memory. The intensity of painting from life and memory serves me when I return to the studio; my field studies bring me back to the scene. I am captivated with what I see, what I hear, what I smell, what I feel in the air, and what the scene evokes from my life." --J. C.

Great Decisions June 15: "Kenya and R2P*"
GREAT DECISIONS, 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 15, in the Church Library. Post-election rioting in Kenya in December 2007 brought pressure on Nairobi, from international and regional diplomats, to end tensions and avert bloodshed on a massive scale. What lessons can be learned from the intervention in Kenya? What does it mean for the UN's emerging "responsibility to protect" doctrine? Our presenter will be LaJune Thomas Lange, a retired judge from the Fourth Judicial District in Minnesota (Hennepin County) who is an internationally recognized expert on human rights and the role of law in developing countries. She has served as consultant to the Independent High Court of Nigeria, High Court of Malawi, and the Kenya Law Society. She has been involved in education programs for the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe, the family court of Morocco, and was invited to assist in the 2007 Kenya election crisis. She is currently directing a post-conflict documentation project in Rwanda. She teaches Human Rights and has been appointed the Republic of South Africa's Honorary Consul in Minnesota. She is a Senior Fellow at the Humphrey School of International Affairs. She is a graduate of Augsburg College and the University of Minnesota Law School. Great Decisions is a discussion group based on topics provided by the Foreign Policy Association, with speakers recommended by the Minnesota International Center. Guests are welcome. For more information, please call Bob Mairs, 651-222-3423, Dennis Anderson, 651-730-4003, or the church office, 651-227-6311.
*The RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT ("RtoP" or "R2P") is a new international security and human rights norm to address the international community's failure to prevent and stop genocides, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
