Cloister Gallery
Photographs by Tom Forster-Smith
From January 10 to 31, the Cloister Art Gallery will feature "A Journey in Photos," an exhibit of photographs taken by Tom Forster-Smith during his recent sabbatical. Tom has been an amateur photographer since he received his first Brownie camera in 1961 at the age of 10. The display will highlight his sabbatical journey to 18 different countries between August 6 and November 18, 2009. |

Seekers "Thin Places" January 20 & 27
The SEEKERS is a conversation group about "Thin Places" between earth and heaven. Join Rev. Tom Forster-Smith in a discussion of places and experiences in our lives where we've felt the presence of the Holy in unusual ways: Wednesday evenings, January 20 and 27, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Kirk Parlour. Women's Advocates January 21
WOMEN'S ADVOCATES shelter for battered women serves nearly 1,000 women and children a year. Women are given emergency shelter, food, clothing and personal items as well as support and counseling. Children are given child care; safety plans; support groups; education and counseling; animal-assisted intervention and art therapy; and facilitation of school enrollment, transportation and tutoring. The Rose Program helps families move into permanent, stable housing and gives intensive care and support services after women and children move out of the shelter. A group of women under the leadership of House of Hope member Liz Boyd volunteers every Third Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 pm. They do a craft project or play bingo with the women and children, and then provide a treat for them. Services provides a weekly support program, at 4 p.m. on

Images of Jesus in Stained Glass January 24
Come to the third of three Sunday sessions exploring Images of JESUS IN THE ARTS at 11:05 a.m. in the Sanctuary on January 24. Nancy Brasel will explore Images of Jesus in Stained Glass, focusing on our Sanctuary windows. This presentation is inter-generational, and children in grades 1-5 will participate with their parents, and then be excused for their own activities relating to the theme of the day.

Enrichment Program: Feed My Starving Children January 24
On January 24, Doug Cornelius of Feed My Starving Children will tell us about his hands-on outreach ministry which prepares meals for distribution to hungry people in developing countries around the world. 11 a.m. in the Assembly Room.

Chapel Organ Recital January 24
On January 24, at 4 p.m., our Elizabeth Chapel Organ Recital Series continues with a performance by Raymond Johnston. Raymond Johnston was born in Kent, England, and is a graduate of Cambridge University. He became assistant organist at Worcester Cathedral and developed a career as an organist and conductor-performing in the UK, Europe, South Africa and the USA. He appeared regularly as accompanist and soloist with the Cathedral Choir on radio, television and commercial recordings, and conducted at the 1993 Three Choirs' Festival. During this time he was also a member of the music staff at The King's School, Worcester, and musical director of the Cathedral Voluntary Choir. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and, since December 2000, Director of Music at St. Mark's Cathedral, Minneapolis. He will be joined by soprano Kristi Bergland. The concert will be preceded by a 30-minute carillon prelude by David Johnson. A reception will follow the organ recital.

The MISSION SEWING GROUP meets on the first and third Thursday of the month, September through May, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Dining Rooms A&B. The group does good work for the missions and enjoys fellowship. Sewing ability is not required. Bring a sandwich; coffee is provided. CPR Training January 23
CPR training to be offered at House of Hope! Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 23, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Training in infant/child CPR, adult CPR and the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator will be included. No written tests, and all participants will use their own mannequin. This intergenerational House of Hope women's program will meet at the Meeting House (761 Summit) on Tuesday, January 26, at 6:30 p.m., to hear our speaker, Amy Brenengen. Amy serves on the legislative staff of the Minnesota Legislature, focusing on women's issues. The evening begins with a social time at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the speaker's presentation. Sign up today at the table outside the Kirk Parlour after the service. First Thursday Literature Series February 4
Joy Davis' Literature Series will continue the study of Nathaniel Hawthorne by discussing his story "Rappacini's Daughter." Our consideration of E. A. Annual Meeting February 7
The Annual Meeting of the Congregation of The House of Hope Presbyterian Church will be held on Sunday, February 7, at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary, for the purposes of receiving reports for 2009 and approving clergy terms of call.

Macalester Sunday February 14
On February 14 we celebrate our historic relationship with Macalester College, whose founder and first president was Edward Duffield Neill. Dr. Neill founded The First Presbyterian Church in 1849 and House of Hope in 1855. The two congregations merged in 1914 to become The House of Hope Presbyterian Church. The worship services begin with the skirls of the bagpipe, and service music is provided by the Macalester College Concert Choir under the direction of Eugene Rogers. Rev. Lucy Forster-Smith, Macalester's Associate Dean for Religious and Spiritual Life and Chaplain of the College, is the preacher of the day. Macalester President Brian Rosenberg brings greetings from the college. Shortbread will be served in Kirk Parlour and members of our congregation who are Macalester graduates serve as greeters. Following 10 a.m. worship, Macalester Provost Kathy Murray will talk about plans for the expansion of the college's Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center. Join us in the Assembly Room.

Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault, Episcopal priest, author, Principal Teacher for the Contemplative Society, and past fellow of the Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research at St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.
