Prostate Cancer Awareness Week
September 19-25, 2010

With Prostate Cancer Awareness Week just around the corner, PCEC has some suggestions to make your Prostate Health Screening Event more efficient and successful.

Pre-Screening Top Three Tips:
  • Prepare your Participant Kits in advance of your screening event. Placing the barcodes on forms, and test tubes prior to your event and clipping each individual packet together helps on event day and allows you to be prepared for any rushes of men.  Often local support groups will volunteer to help prepare the packets!
  • Make sure you have ordered an ample amount of Screening Questionnaires, PSA Lab Kits and Educational Materials.  If you haven't ordered your supplies yet, please contact PCEC at 1-866-477-6788 as soon as possible!
  • All Registered  Screening Sites will receive a Media Kit which includes: template press releases, newspaper drop-in ads, public service announcements, posters, advertisements and recommendations for successful marketing.  The information is available electronically as well just contact us!

Watch for our NEW
   "Knowledge is Power" Poster:

PCEC wants to ensure that your participants fully understand Prostate Screening. We are excited to launch our new Knowledge is Power Poster which is designed to ensure  participants understand and are educated on the risks and benefits of screening!  Watch for this useful new poster with  your screening supplies!

PCEC Longitudinal Research

The Prostate Cancer Education Council is dedicated to ongoing research, and actively participates in the development of new technologies to advance the detection and treatment of prostate cancer.  As part of this commitment, the PCEC collects and analyzes extensive data and serum samples from screening participants, under an institutional review board (IRB)-approved research protocol.  These unique stores of information have proven to be valuable assets in the federal approval of early Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests, identifying new biomarkers, establishing the link between body mass index (BMI) and prostate cancer, and assessing patient prostate cancer risk.

While the primary focus of PCAW is to provide prostate health screenings, we also focus on efforts to track and study patients longitudinally. Efforts of our longitudinal research include following diagnoses and treatment options for conditions such as: benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Erectile Dysfunction (ED), elevated Cholesterol, and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS).

PCEC is also working to gather outcome information from PCAW participants with abnormal results.  Currently, this is primarily accomplished via a Follow-Up Form which consists of four questions addressing treatment options, if a patient chose to have a follow-up based on their screening results.

PCEC would like to congratulate and applaud the 65 Longitudinal Screening Sites! Forty of these sites have been screening consecutively for three or more years; and twenty have been screening two or more years! Participation as a Longitudinal Site ensures forward progression in prostate health research and directly impacting patient care.

Screening Site "Notes From Your Peers"
  • It is very easy to participate in research studies by upgrading your Basic Screening Site to a Tracking or Longitudinal Study Site.
  • PCEC provides registered screening sites with Screening Check-In signs!  These signs help direct your participants to the proper area to check in.
  • PCEC has  "Know-Your-Numbers" wallet cards for participants to keep track of their blood test results from year to year! Look for them in you supply shipment!

The PACE RACE Series
Volunteering!

Volunteering is great way to give back to the community and it's a good way to get to know what's happening in your city. In 2009, 26.8 percent of the population volunteered at an event, function, or gathering. Charity runs and walks are a perfect way to show your support for the cause, and to help your fellow neighbor or friend. The best part of volunteering is that it is free! If you enjoy being surrounded by positive people, enjoy giving back to your community and want to support the cause, then we encourage you to volunteer!
