Connie's Personal Message
The current job market is a lot like Spring; and Spring has
definitely sprung. Many of you
know that I am an avid walker.
On a recent early morning walk I noticed evidence of Spring around
me everywhere, the trees are leafed out and roadside flowers are in bloom. Temperatures, although a bit
unpredictable, are definitely on a warming trend. The job market, although also still a bit unpredictable, is
definitely warming back up too.
Corporations large and small are hiring again. Venture capital-backed companies are popping up
everywhere. Employers and employees haven't quite caught on yet to the
ramifications of the seasonal shift.
Ironically, according to Chris Murphy, Info Week March 29, 2010, " US IT
Salary Survey results show pay freezes across the board, but pay attention to
the consequences." He warns,
"Employees worried about their jobs and craving recognition (are) preparing to
leave if opportunity knocks." With 80% of jobs never advertised, now is the time to learn
more about "When, Why and How to work with Your Recruiter" which concludes our three part
series on "Recruiters...The key Ingredient to your Career Management Strategy".
To your success,
Connie

TOOLS, TIPS and ADVICE for your CAREER
Do You Use This Career Secret Weapon? When, Why and How to work with Recruiters Would you rather spend your after-work-hours time broadly researching positions where you'll be competing amongst sometimes hundreds of other applicants, likely hoping in vain your resume reaches the hiring manager? Or would you rather spend your time perfecting your interviewing skills for a plum position, custom-picked for you, with few competitors? About half of the jobs at the $100K+ level in the US are filled through headhunters according to Marc Cenedella, Founder & CEO, TheLadders.com. Clearly then, having a relationship with a recruiter (also known as a "headhunter") in your niche should be an integral component of your overall career management strategy. Follow these tips for knowing when, why and how to work with recruiters to achieve your highest career goals and potential. When is the best time to work with a recruiter? -
When you are still working is the best time to connect with a recruiter.
-
It's a fact you have greater value in the market when you are employed and you'll be able to negotiate a higher salary!
-
When you are working you don't feel the pressure of accepting a job just to pay the bills, you can be more selective.
Why work with a recruiter? -
Recruiters have access to many positions that are not advertised. Small to mid-sized firms are growing rapidly and offer excellent career opportunities. It is typically those companies that turn to search firms. Most likely you'd never otherwise discover these plum positions on your own.
-
Recruiters are educated and aware of market trends. They can talk with you about current trends and predict future trends.
-
Recruiters often have tremendous insight into the companies they represent and therefore better prepare you for your interviews.
-
Working with recruiters is the best way to conduct a passive job search.
-
When working with a recruiter you are able to test your marketability without risking your current job.
-
If your recruiter knows your long-term goals, they can help you find positions that will enable you to attain your goals.
-
You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Unless you feel it is your next logical career move, there is no obligation on your part to accept any position.
How to work with a recruiter? Prepare in advance, make lists, line up your references and be ready to answer questions. -
Prepare your resume; most recruiters want to see your resume before they schedule a time to talk with you.
-
Know your market; make a list of companies within your market and the titles of the positions you want to pursue.
-
Make a list of your accomplishments (quantifiable, if possible) and be ready to back them up articulately. Recruiters will sell your accomplishments to their clients.
-
Know your career goals (short and long term), your geographical and commute preferences, your strengths, and your areas of improvement and what defines your ideal work environment.
-
Line up rock-solid references you can trust to keep your search confidential are best prepared in advance, so they can help you seal the deal when you're about to get your offer. Prime them on what you believe will be important to your prospective employer and they may even be able to shore up some areas you forgot to in your interview.
In short, make it easy for your recruiter* to work with you by having clarity about what you have to offer and where you see yourself going.
