World Fair-Trade Day
8th May 2010
Greetings!

8th May 2010 is World Fair-Trade Day!
Learn about how it positively impacts the lives of marginalised people and how Oasis is part of the Fair-Trade movement in India and around the world.
What is Fair-Trade?
And why is it important?

Fair-Trade is a global movement aimed at alleviating poverty by providing fair, sustainable income and a dignified life to the marginalized people living in the developing countries while delivering a fair deal to consumers on a sustainable basis.

Fair-Trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach that aims to help producers in developing countries obtain better trading conditions and promote sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a higher price to producers as well as social and environmental standards. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries.

Free trade is often not fair for farmers and artisans, their families, communities, or the environment. Artisans face poverty and the loss of culture as they find the need to work in sweatshops. Fair-Trade ensures better lives by helping afford health care and keep their children in school; and by supporting sustainable production. Fair Trade producers also set aside funds for community projects like schools and clinics; and for training in quality improvement and sustainable production.

Oasis and Fair-Trade

Oasis addresses social and economic issues affecting vulnerable and excluded women in India, understanding that when women are empowered, families and ultimately entire communities will be positively transformed. Oasis started vocational training in 1994 with a tailoring project for women in Mumbai. Several years later, the project moved to Bangalore. The year-long training, including: tailoring, pattern cutting, embroidery, English, life-skills and basic computer skills, is offered free of charge to women from local slum communities.

Jacobs Well  is the fair-trade, ethical business initiative of Oasis that employs graduates of the training programme. Jacobs Well is also a production facility for designers and other companies and is a provisional member of the World Fair-Trade Organisation and a member of the Fair-Trade Forum - India.

Gandhi said, be the change you wish to see in the world. By supporting Fair-Trade you will be contributing towards changing the status of marginalised small producers by giving them a voice - your voice!

Fair-Trade ensures that small producers get a fair deal, good working conditions and fair prices under safe conditions, allowing for sustainable development and a promising future for millions of farmers and artisan communities around the world.
