Moving on

One of the most common ways for women to be trafficked into prostitution is through the promise of a job in a big city. These promises are usually made by a person in a position of trust.

Parvati, aged 30, experienced this ordeal and was sold to a brothel in Mumbai on the pretext of being offered work. Not only was she cut off from her family and enslaved to her 'owners', she soon discovered that she was HIV positive. When she became too ill to work, she was forced out of the brothel and sought help from staff at Oasis India's Aruna drop-in centre in the red-light area. She was referred on to Nirmal Bhavan, Oasis' residential transitional care home for women from situations of sexual abuse and her health was cared for. At the home, Parvati will be able to learn new skills and will be helped get a job to support herself.

The Bangalore Yellows

The Bangalore Yellows, Oasis' football team in Bangalore, are getting ready to play in the 14th State Level Gold Cup Tournament. The team got into the semi-finals last year and were up against a more experienced team. After both teams had scored a goal each, it was down to a penalty shoot where the Oasis team lost 4-5. Despite having lost the match, the tournament chief was impressed with the boys' performance and invited them to play in this years' tournament without having to play the qualifying matches. They play their first quarter-final match on Friday.
