Greetings!
Through its Transitional Care programme, Oasis India offers rehabilitative care to women rescued from situations of sexual abuse and to women and children abandoned and orphaned by HIV. This month, we bring you Raina's story - a woman rescued from brokenness now on a journey towards wholeness.
Also read about how you can help people like Raina by supporting us at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon. |

Positive focus Raina was twice divorced before she was 20 years old and was desperate to leave her hometown. Her neighbour, taking advantage of the situation, promised Raina a job in Mumbai but instead, sold her to the owner of a dance bar in one of Mumbai's large red light areas. She was forced to work there and serve customers. She soon became pregnant and was forced to have an abortion.
After 3 years, Raina was rescued from the bar during a police raid and was moved into protective custody. However, fearing her 'owners' she failed to testify against them and consequently went back to work for them. During the course of time, Raina met an Oasis social worker and visited the Aruna drop-in centre where she was counselled, offered options of rehabilitation and also received the support she needed to leave prostitution. She was helped to recover some of the money owed to her and soon went to live at Nirmal Bhavan, Oasis India's home for women rescued from situations of sexual abuse and exploitation. She is currently participating in the literacy classes and is trying to put her past behind her and start afresh. |
