Greetings!
I am sure my e-mail finds you in perfect posture as the picture above. More likely it serves as the occasional reminder we all need to straighten up at our computer. With everyday stresses and so many aspects of our health needing attention it is difficult to keep up with all we should be doing.
You might find occasional reminders from us helpful - not only in improving your spinal health - but in making your lifestyle healthier in ways you may not have considered.
We plan to send quarterly e-mails with important postural advice, stretching and exercise tips, nutritional advice, latest research on health matters, and any office news that might affect the services available to you. This forum will also update you on various specials we offer like the attached massage coupon.
Please let us know if there are any particular topics of interest, or how we may improve our service to you in any way. As always if you find any of our communications intrusive please infrorm us by unsubscribing or calling our office at 781 641 4482.
On the other hand if you find our newsletter helpful, you may forward it to friends, family or anyone you know that might need some tips or advice about improving their health and well-being.
Wishing you a healthy and joyful spring!

| Hidden Back Dangers of Spring |
Spring cleaning & yard work time!
One way or another the change in seasons brings about a sudden change in activity level. Be it gardening, mowing the lawn, packing away winter clothes, raking and mulching, changing storm windows, cleaning the garage, moving heaters, fans, humidifiers, pots, soil etc.
These new activities bring about some hidden dangers to the unsuspecting and unprepared spine. The following is a list of things to keep in mind to prevent back injury:
·When lifting bags of mulch, soil etc. always keep item close to your body. · Lift with your legs. · Lift without rounding low back - keep slight arch. · Do not bend at the waist planting or weeding. · Squat or Kneel instead of bending - avoid rounded back. · Do not crouch over 10-15 minutes at a time. · Take breaks from working low on the ground by doing other tasks and then returning to the ground.
· Minimize twisitng by rotating at the hips and shifting body weight from one leg to another - do not just plant your feet and rotate at the waist.
Get your body ready for the changing temperatures! At the change of seasons, when sudden and drastic changes in temperature (over 20°) and air pressure happen, the back discs and all our joints get affected. Come to the office for some spinal "spring cleaning" and enjoy the season injury free. |
| Dizziness and Chiropractic |
Poorly functioning neck joints are the link
There can be many sources for dizziness, some serious and some less so. Brain injury and inner ear conditions need to be ruled out.
For years Chiropractors have found that problems with the function of the neck joints (subluxations) can irritate the nervous system and sometimes cause dizziness. One recent study proved this in chronic (long term) whiplash patients.
They used a test called "Joint position error", (which measures accuracy of return to natural head posture after turning and leaning back) to measure 102 subjects with persistent whiplash-associated disorder and 44 control subjects.
The results proved that Neck joint sensor dysfunction, (Neck joint dysfunction is what chiropractic excels in correcting), is a likely cause of dizziness in whiplash-associated disorders.
Besides explaining why chiropractic can be an effective treatment for dizziness, it more importantly serves as one example of how dysfunction of the spinal joints and chiropractic treatment can affect more than just spinal pain.
Dizziness and unsteadiness following whiplash injury: characteristic features and relationship with cervical joint position error.
