Mudbug Madness THIS SATURDAY!

David Sousa & The Zydeco Mudbugs at Seaport Village, Long Beach, CA

Saturday, August 20, 2011

David Sousa

Zydeco by the Sea

What a special treat! THIS SATURDAY afternoon, August 20, 2011 from 2-5 pm folks will be able to dance and listen to David Sousa and the Zydeco Mudbugs under the canopy at The Boardwalk Theatre Stage at Long Beach's Seaport Village shopping center. This event is FREE to the public. C'mon out! Help spread the word about Zydeco and support the Golden Sails Zydeco events while you're at it! Remember, the bands that play at the Golden Sails all play for the door, so the more folks we can recruit, the more for the bands!

Located across the street from Rainbow Lagoon, Seaport Village is right on the water and just across the harbor from the majestic Queen Mary. Arrive early and enjoy strolling the length of the village as the boats in the marina bob gently at their moorings, check out the many quaint shops, get yerself some freshly made Funnel Cake or Churros at the Funnel House next to the stage, ride the carousel. After the show, grab some great grub at one of the Village's excellent eateries. There's lots of free parking too. Whatever you do, be sure to enjoy David and the band from 2-5 pm! See y'all there!

Andre Thierry THIS SUNDAY Aug. 21!
Memorial Park, La Canada, CA
Andre Striped Shirt Posterized

Wow! Wish I'd have known about this sooner so you folks would have more notice, but sometimes that's just how it be, I guess.

Anyway...if you don't already have iron-clad plans, this is a great opportunity to see one of the best artists in the genre. I know. I know! I'm preaching to the choir for many of you and I'm sure I'll see you there.

Now for those of you who are new to the Gazette: I don't care what you have to do, or how far you have to drive: DROP. EVERYTHING. AND HOOF IT UP TO LA CANADA FOR THIS CONCERT, cuz' Andre is one of the best of the best. He doesn't get down here from his home in the Bay area all that much, and you get to see him for FREE to boot!

This event is held at a little jewel of a city park right on the main drag in La Canada, at the intersection of Foothill Blvd and La Canada Blvd, which is where Highway 2 begins it's winding way through the Angeles Crest National Forest.

Belting out one high-octane Zydeco tune after another, Andre has been asked back to La Canada for their summer concert series year after year for good reason.

Playing everything from soulful, bluesy two-steps to upbeat tunes, he also includes waltzes and line dances to keep everyone happy.

Andre's unique voice gives his vocals a distinctive, soulful quality you'll remember for life. Once you hear him, you'll be hooked! So...bring your babies, dogs, friends and your tube chairs. Pack a picnic, throw in some chicken, cake and chips. Then settle down on the emerald blades of the city's well-manicured lawn and allow yourself to be caressed by the gentle breezes of early eve, while the cerulean sky fills with lavender hues.

Oh yes, take a turn on the dance floor too, for an unforgettable summer's eve.

Joe Sand & His Cajun Creole Band

(Formerly Fontenot Pappion Louisiana Band)

"Old Style" Louisiana Music

Joe Fontenot Gaor 2011

   Family Tradition Carries On!

Born on April 3, 1934 not far from Mammou in the tiny Louisiana settlement of John Reed, Joe Fontenot's childhood deep in the forests that were the home of revered Creole musician Bois Sec Ardoin provided him with the rich cultural background that makes Fontenot one of southern California's hidden gems.

While Joe didn't pick up an accordion until many years after moving to California in 1952, Joe's music is influenced by his memories of riding to dances in horse-drawn buggies and wagons, snugly wrapped in the blankets his mother tucked around him.

"Jimmy Rodgers and Amadee Ardoin made me love music," Fontenot says. "I also listened to Hank Williams and all the country music greats."

When asked what made him decide to pick up the accordion, Fontenot says he had always been interested in playing. Even though they lived here in California, his cousin Dempsey Pappion's Dad and uncles played all the time and eventually Joe bought his first squeezebox on a visit back home. It was a little beginner's single-note accordion by Hohner he picked up at Floyd's Records in Ville Platte.

A self-taught musician, Joe first played around with guitar, but it was the accordion that held his interest. Learning to play using Mark Savoy's book, "How to Play Cajun Accordion," Joe continued teaching himself the songs of his homeland. Dancers were delighted earlier this year when Fontenot got on accordion at a local Mardi Gras event and quite proficiently pumped out those upbeat Creole dance tunes.

Shy and soft-spoken by nature, Joe is quiet and doesn't say much unless you ask him a question. However, his love of traditional Cajun and Creole tunes played "Old Style" shines through when he picks up one of the several accordions he owns today, and man, can he play!

Accompanied by his cousin Dempsey Pappion on rubboard, Joe's band is a family affair. Joe is passing his love of his music and culture to his grandson "Little John," who plays rubboard with the band as well. Add a dash of bass guitar, drums, rhythm guitar and throw in a bit of old-time fiddle and you've got gumbo! Musical gumbo, that is.

John Reed is gone now, a mere memory. However, Joe shares that memory through his music every time he plays. Now all of us can live part of it too! Come join Joe and the band and "pass a good time," as they say in Louisiana, when Joe, Dempsey and Little John share their gifts at the Golden Sails on Sunday night, August 28.

By the way, part of the Creole tradition is something known as Lagniappe, or a little something extra. On that note, I heard a rumor that Creole chef Guy Du Plantier will be stoppin' by that night, this time with some Gumbo for folks to try. Ummm. Ummm. Ummm. Can't wait! While I won't be teaching a lesson that night, I hope to see you there!

ZYDECO NIGHT AT

THE LOS ANGELES MUSIC CENTER!

Friday, August 26, 2011

Dance Downtown Dancers on Plaza

Just in case summer's been a bit blas for you, here's one more opportunity for pre-fall fun: It's the Los Angeles Music Center's Zydeco night!

Part of their bi-weekly "Dance Downtown" dance concert series, held next to the fountain on the plaza in front of the venerable Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, this year's Zydeco Night promises to be another magical evening.

As you can see, this wonderful space is filled with light and joy as dancers are caressed by the evening breezes and the lanterns sway above the dance floor.

This year's band is Eddie Baytos & The Nervis Brothers, and I've been told they're gonna pull out all the stops for some great Louisiana-style fun!

As this series is custom-tailored for the dancers, there will be two basic Zydeco dance lessons at this event, plus a lesson toward the end of the evening for the next event in two weeks.

The event is FREE! Parking is $9 in the Music Center garage. Plan on arriving early, so you can snag a seat at one of the tables at the plaza and guarantee parking ease. I'm teaching that night, and am looking forward to seeing y'all there!
