ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS IN THE GATOR GAZETTE!
You never know how useful it might be. Recently, someone I know needed a contractor to do some work on her Grandmother's house in San Francisco. I had seen an ad in the Bay Area's Cajun/Zydeco newsletter for a Contractor and was able to refer her to him.
The Gator Gazette reaches folks all over southern California and is also read in Northern California, across the U.S., Japan, the Netherlands and more!

PHOTOS ANYONE? I never have pics of me teaching to send people/promoters who want to hire me for gigs. I noticed that someone was taking pics while I was teaching on the Main dance floor on Saturday at the Bayou Festival this past weekend. If anyone knows who this was, how to get in touch with him, or how to get them from him/her, please let me know. I'd really appreciate it. Email me at karinovations@verizon.net or call me at 562-708-8946.
Merci! ________________________________
BOOM BOX BLUES No, that's not the name of a hot new zydeco band (but it could be!) Here's the deal: I've bought three new boom boxes in the past several months to use for teachin' my lessons and I've had to return every single one of them because they won't play the burned CD's I use to teach.
So I went out and got a nice used iPod from Craigslist and loaded all 8 gigs of my music on it. Groovy, man. I'm chillin'!
Unfortunately, now I'm having trouble with the iPod dock I got and it's got to go back too. If this keeps up, I'll be bald from tearing my hair out. No one wants to see that, least of all ME!
If anyone has a good used iPod dock for sale, (preferably with a remote) or even an older boom box that will play my burned CD's, please call me IMMEDIATELY at 562-708-8946! I need something that works for my lessons that start this Wednesday night.
If you'd be interested in trading for private lessons, all the better! __________________________________
ASK FOR GIOVANNI HAIR AND BODY CARE AT YOUR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MA AND PA HEALTH FOOD STORE! Why? Well, because I'm the new Inside Sales Rep for Giovanni and southern California is my territory, from San Luis Obispo south to the border. I sell to the small independent health food stores and I get commission when they call me to order. The order still gets turned over to their distributors, but when they call me, the retailer gets lots of extra support. There is
specific info you need to tell the store's buyers, so SEE STORY BELOW FOR MORE INFO!

ANDRE THIERRY'S BIRTHDAY BASH JULY 10! Andre plays War Memorial Hall at San Diego Bons Temps 2nd Saturday dance
|
| As the West Coast's premiere Zydeco accordion player, and arguably one of the best in the nation, Andre will be celebrating his birthday next Saturday night by entertaining us dancers at the Bons Temps 2nd Sunday dance at the War Memorial Hall in Balboa Park.
To the newcomers to the Gazette: Dubbed "The Jimi Hendrix of Zydeco" by Et Toi magazine, Andre was a child prodigy who's now an accordion savant. His bluesy styling and soulful vocals will capture your imagination, evoke memories of happy and sad times, renew forgotten emotions and will definitely make you wanna dance!
It's worth the drive and the cost of a hotel room, so be there if you can. You'll thank me for it. See you there!

DEXTER ARDOIN IN LAKEWOOD JULY 11 Louisiana artist flyin' in to play LA |
| A member of the revered Ardoin clan that goes back to famed Creole musician Bois Sec Ardoin, Dexter plays authentic, high-energy zydeco that's Creole to the core.
The dancin' will be joyful, fast and furious, so come on out to see Dexter next Sunday.
There is a lot of great information on Dexter's MySpace page, including a link to rare footage of Bois Sec playing "Old Style" with Canray Fontenot. These two formed the foundation and roots of the music we hear today. I've seen this footage before, but am still riveted to the monitor as I watch it once more.
Be sure to click on the Music Playre (that's my new "French" spelling, LOL!) on Dexter's MySpace page and listen to how the music has evolved.
While Dexter won't have the Creole Ramblers with him, the JPL Allstars will do a great job backing him up. I expect to see you all on the dance floor next Sunday night!
In the meantime, check out Dexter's MySpace page HERE!

CD REVIEW: Leroy Thomas Proves he's "Jewel of the Bayou |
| Probably the most prolific songwriter in the Zydeco genre today, Leroy constantly amazes me with one new song after another. Named "Jewel of the Bayou" by the New York Times, Thomas has been performing since he was 18, starting on drums with his father's band. The CD insert mentions that Leroy has performed in 39 states and 3 countries and in 2009 played at the private Mardi Gras bash in Houston for Mr. & Mrs. George Bush, Sr. and I know why. His lyrics are earthy, high-energy fun. He's got a great sense of humor, knows what makes the dancers move, and delivers it in style. Consisting of 16 tracks, this CD is a winner that you'll want to add to your collection. Unlike some albums, every track on this CD is a keeper. There's a nice mix of tempos slow to fast, with something for everyone. The only notable exception is the absence of even one waltz. There are several great line dance tunes, including Suffle Zydeco. For the Country Music fans, there's a distinctive Country flair to several cuts, including the honkey-tonk inspired Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound. The hysterical Bearilla Woman is about a man who spends a night with a woman only to wake up finding she doesn't look at good as she did the night before. Gentlemen, I know you know what he's talking about! Your Turn To Lose is irresistible dance music that will make even the most committed couch potato jump up out of their favorite chair and boogie down, and the classic Bring It On Home To Me is the perfect "Belly Rubber" (thanks for that term, Bruce!) for sweethearts young and old. I'm In Love Witcha Baby recycles an old zydeco standard melody with great new lyrics and will be a hit for the line dancers and two-steppers at the same time. (You know what I mean-dance floor full of gyrating bodies, some syncopated on one end, others dancing in one spot with their partners.) Taxi, Take Me To The Trailride has a snappy new beat and attitude, and I Think I Need A Boosta is Leroy's great rhyming version of the Viagra-inspired songs that have become so popular. Let's Boogie adds a nice taste of the blues. I could go on, but you get the idea. You're going to want this CD. If you can't make it to a dance, buy the CD, invite some friends over and play this CD. It's a nice alternative! To purchase "Jewel of the Bayou," go to Floyd's Records website TODAY, as Leroy probably won't be back out here on the west coast for a while now. CLICK HERE for Floyd's website. Just type in Jewel of the Bayou in the search window at the top right corner of the website. For more info on Leroy, CLICK HERE and enjoy a visit to his new website! (LEROY FACTOID: I once asked Leroy about how his signature stars-and-stripes accordion was made. He told me it was painted with automotive paint. Ingenious!)

POOKIE AND ZYDECO SENSATIONS AT LOS ANGELES MUSIC CENTER JULY 30 Lil' Pookie ripped it up at Bayou Festival, is a MUST SEE at FREE "Dance Downtown" outdoor dance concert.
|
| Young and hip, at age 35, Pookie's been performing for many years and brings his own unique touches to zydeco. He plays original Pookie tunes, traditional and Nouveau styles with flare. This is Louisiana Creole French dance music at it's best!
With 13-year-old son Jarus Seraile setting burnin' it up on rubboard, Andre Thierry on
bass and the rest of his band behind him, Pookie was
definitely sensational at the Bayou Festival this past weekend. All I can say is, "Wow!" This is fully-leaded, syncopated, pedal-to-the-metal zydeco.
Jarus, (who learned rubboard in just two days!) plays like a 40 year veteran and promises to be a big hit with the pre-teen set, so drag 'em out, put 'em in the car, I don't care what you do, just get those kids there! (He's a great kid. Very sweet, and he dances too!) It will be a fun family outing. There are plenty of tables around the plaza, so bring a picnic and
relax.
For this music to survive here in southern California, the young people have got to get excited about this music, so do what you can to get the younger people there on July 30! If you are one of my younger readers, bring your friends, OK?
Pookie's first CD should be available for purchase that night, so come ready with cash, as I'm sure you'll be wanting to get one.
Mark your calendars! You will want to be at the Los Angeles Music Center's "Dance Downtown" free dance concert series on Friday night, July 30, 2010. Dance under the stars in front of the Dorothy Chandler while the evening breezes caress you, the sky becomes filled with the gold and purple pastels of sunset and the fountain fills the air with mist.
As always, there will be dance lessons, so c'mon out and join us dancing under the stars in front of the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion. Make new friends, learn a few new moves, and spread the gospel of Zydeco. Here are the details:
July 30, 2010 Lil' Pookie and the Zydeco Sensations Dance Downtown 6:30 - 10:00 pm FREE! Dance lesson at 6:30 with Karen Redding Los Angeles Music Center Plaza (In front of Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, by the fountain) 135 N. Grand Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90012
