ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS IN THE GATOR GAZETTE!
You never know how useful it might be. Recently, someone I know needed a contractor to do some work on her Grandmother's house in San Francisco. I had seen an ad in the Bay Area's Cajun/Zydeco newsletter for a Contractor and was able to refer her to him.
The Gator Gazette reaches folks all over southern California and is also read in Northern California, across the U.S., Japan, the Netherlands and more!

Greetings!
I can't believe it's June already. Half the the year is gone, having flown past at breakneck speed. At this rate, Christmas will be here in two weeks! Lots of great things are coming up, with more being added almost daily. Be sure to read the entire newsletter so you don't miss anything!
There's a LOT of stuff you guys will want to know about, including the registration info for the next four week series of Zydeco classes at Lakewood Parks & Rec, which starts Wednesday, July 7! I've added an Intermediate Zydeco class, so be sure to sign up! More info below.
While this isn't a Zydeco event, if you're in Long Beach tomorrow (Sunday), June 13, stop by Rancho Los Alamitos' annual "Come Home to Povuu'ngna" celebration and catch San Diego Zydeco's Native American Comic, Abel Silvas, as his alter ego Running Grunion entertains and educates with his hysterical comedy routine. See story below for more info.
NOTE: I have the final schedule for the Long Beach Bayou Festival, coming up in just two weeks! See below for all the details!
PASSAGES:
The Zydeco community lost Mr. Michael DeClouet to cancer last weekend. DeClouet was known for his generosity, gentle nature, and his
deep love of zydeco. Living part time in San Diego and part time in Louisiana, Michael will be greatly missed by many. There will be a memorial service for Mike in San Diego on June
19.
Mike inherited the legendary Richard's Club after it closed a few years ago. After pouring his heart and soul and a ton of money into it, Mike reopened the club in August of 2008 as the Zydeco Hall of Fame, with Keith Frank headlining. The place was packed with joyous well-wishers from all over the country who were thrilled that the venerable establishment was back on it's feet. Michael also supported many in the zydeco community in a variety of ways. The world is a better place for his having been here. Again, he will be missed. May you Rest In Peace, Michael.
TRANSITIONS:
The other big news is that Zydeco Icon Keith Frank announced his upcoming retirement. He sent out a long message to folks explaining why. I've included it below. You can use the link in the "In This Issue" to navigate there or just keep scrolling down. ________________________________
Zydeco is
back at the Los Angeles Music Center's "Dance Downtown" FREE summer dance concert series on Friday night, July 30!
Lil' Pookie is playing, I'll be teaching the dance lesson that
night, so MARK YOUR
CALENDARS! ________________________________
Geno
Delafose will be playing in Culver City on Thursday night August 5.
Unfortunately, this is also the same night the Skirball decided to bring in Steve Riley,
so we're going to have to choose between the two that night. Thanks to
Joel Okida for letting me know about these two events.

WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE
DANCER? Anita and I were talking the other day and she asked
me who I like to dance with the most in closed dance position. We both
agreed we prefer the guys who are really smooth dancers, with a light
lead, usually from Louisiana.

Keep Reading. There are many more NEW events added to this Gazette, so be sure to check out the calendar section to plan your Zydeco dance schedule.
See you on the dance floor!

Running Grunion Will Crack You Up at "Come Home to Povuu'ngna" THIS SUNDAY, June 13 Rancho Los Alamitos, Long Beach, CA |
| Does this guy look familiar? Yep! It's San Diego Zydeco dancer Abel Silvas as his alter ego Running Grunion. Running Grunion entertains and educates with his hysterical comedy routine tomorrow at 2:40 pm at "Come Home to Povuu'ngna"
Located at historical Rancho Los Alamitos in Long Beach, this annual event is one of my favorites. The Tongva were the original inhabitants of this region, and this event is a tribute to this native nation.
In the afternoon, you can take a tour of the original adobe Rancho, sample Tongva food, see demonstratons of Tongva arts & crafts, including "Ti'at (canoe) construction, sand painting, design of dolphin crowns and
scallop shell necklaces as well as a live raptor exhibit and
storytelling that will engage and delight children." There is also a lot more planned, and I know you'll have a wonderful time, so be sure to attend.
The Rancho is located on the hill just east of the campus of California State University, Long Beach.
For those of you who might be interested, there is also a symposium in the morning that sounds very interesting.
Both events are FREE, but you must make reservations for parking for the symposium in the morning. Call the Rancho today at 562-431-3541 or make your reservations online.
Click here for event website Click Here for Symposium Website
Here are the details:
Running Grunion (Abel Silvas) at Come Home to Pouvuu'ngna Rancho Los Alamitos FREE Admission FREE PARKING at CSULB Lot 11 (Palo Verde and Rendina St.) Shuttle will take you into the Rancho. Event Hours: Noon-4:30 pm Running Grunion Performs: 2:40-3:10 pm Symposium Hours: 9:30-11:30 am (Parking Reservation Required for Symposium)
I know I'll at least be there in the afternoon, so see you guys there!

PASSAGES: Michael DeClouet Gentle Soul, Huge Heart
|
| Michael De Clouet on rubboard with Dempsey Pappion
The Zydeco community lost Mr. Michael DeClouet to cancer last weekend.
DeClouet was known for his generosity, gentle nature, and his
deep love of zydeco. Living part time in San Diego and
part time in Louisiana, Michael will be greatly missed. There
will be a memorial service for Mike in San Diego on June
19.
Raised outside Lawtelle and Lake Charles, Louisiana, Michael's biggest project and labor of love was reopening the historical club originally known as Richards, which he purchased after it closed a few years ago. He poured his heart and soul and a ton of money into the project. Due to legal issues, he could not use the Richards name, and it was opened as The Zydeco Hall of Fame on Friday night, August 8, 2008, with Keith Frank headlining. The place was packed with joyous well-wishers from all over the country who were thrilled that the venerable establishment was open again . Click here for an extensive story
Michael also
supported the zydeco community in a variety of ways. As
rubboard player for San Diego's Mojo Dawg zydeco band and the Pappion
Louisiana Band, DeClouet spread the gospel of zydeco by helping the
bands get many gigs, including a weekly Friday night engagement at San Diego's
Chateau Orleans.
Michael was known for his huge smile that could light up a room. He made the world a better place. Please join his family and friends at his memorial services if you can.
Memorial service for Michael DeClouet Saturday,
June 19, 2010, 3:00 pm St. James By The Sea Episcopal Church in LaJolla 743 Prospect St. La Jolla, CA 92037 Reception following service at St. James Hall across the street.

ZYDECO LEGEND TO RETIRE Letter from Keith Frank |
| One of the top performers in Zydeco, Keith Frank has announced his pending retirement. Here's his letter to his fans.
From Keith Frank: To all my friends, family and fans across the world let me start by saying thank you from the bottom of my heart for the years of unparalleled support. The Soileau Zydeco band has the most loyal supporters in the world and it is only through you all and the grace of God that we have seen the success that we have. Your support is humbling and heartfelt. I love you all and I thank you.....
Over the past few days we have received hundreds of calls and messages regarding my retirement, so I have decided to address the matter in writing, to dispel any rumors that may be floating around. ....
On this past Sunday, at the Zydeco Extravaganza, I made an announcement that I would be walking away from Zydeco music in the coming months. So yes, it is true. The number one question has been why. To be honest, there isn't any one answer. ....
I can remember the day I decided to start this band. I was just a bright eyed kid with big dreams of making music that people would know and love. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to make it this far. From the beginning my mom, Brad and Jenn have been my rock and my foundation. The music business is a tough one, especially for 3 kids from Soileau, trying to survive among giants like Boozoo Chavis, John Delafose, Beau Jocque, Zydeco Force and so many others. But through the highs and lows mom, Brad and Jennifer have always been there! I love you all more than you'll ever know and we will always share a bond like no other, through the memories we have shared and made.....
I have been fortunate enough to make a living off of my passion all of my life. I have played in front of thousands of people over the past 20+ years of my career on some of the biggest stages in the world. We have won the awards, we've won the battles, broke the records and in the process we have secured ourselves a spot in the history books. Everything I have set out to do has been done and I owe it all to best fans and family in the world.....
But all success comes at a cost. As I have gotten older I have realized that life is not about the fame, accolades or money. When it is all said and done, none of that will matter. I once read a quote that has always stuck with me. It says, "In between goals is a thing called life that has to be lived and enjoyed". When I am gone, the only memories of me to my family should not be with an accordion in my hand. I love music, but my family is and always will be my first priority. Everything I do, I do for them. So while I am still young, I feel like I have a priority to myself and my family to live a little and enjoy the fruits of my labor!....
So simply said, I have conquered all the things I ever wanted to, and I did it all MY way. That's the same way I want to walk away from it all. My heart is heavy and the outpouring of love from you the fans is such a blessing. I ask that you continue to send us your comments, well wishes and love. ....
Over the next several months we will try our best to accommodate and play AS MANY SHOWS AS POSSIBLE. It will be our road to the end, and we want to share it with as many fans as we possibly can. Again, I love you all and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart and I assure you, that we are going out with a bang! Get ready for the biggest shows and best music you have ever heard from Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco band. I hope we make you proud.....
Sincerely, ....
Keith Frank Forever....
