Volunteer Management Training - August 17th Volunteer Roanoke Valley will hold its annual Volunteer Management Conference on August 17th. This is an excellent opportunity to gain new knowledge, meet new people, and network with those in the volunteer management field. Social Media training for Nonprofits! The Council of Community Services is offering a social media training for nonprofits on August 18th. Martin J. Cowling will present to the group about the importance of this tool and how to use it effectively within your organizations. Contact Alison for more information!
No time to volunteer? Use your computer to volunteer while you are not working by becoming a part of the "World Community Grid" which combines several projects involving: fighting cancer, fighting AIDS, clean energy and other projects into one overall umbrella. Email Alison for more information.
Special Event Opportunities
BB&T's Party in the Park has chosen its 2010 nonprofit partner agencies. These agencies need volunteers to help with the Party in the Park events every Thursday night May 27th - September 9th. Volunteers help with admissions, raffles, ID checks, beer ticket sales, beer sales, etc. Contact Alison for more information 985-0131 x502.
Ciclovia will take place on June 27th. Volunteers needed! Contact Ándrea Martin at 853-1801.
The MDA Supper Camp will take place from July 11th - July 16th. Volunteer camp counselors are needed (ages 17 and up). Contact Donna Kester at 772-3237.
The Salvation Army needs volunteer Bell Ringers for "Christmas in July" kettle campaign. Contact Robin Sligh at 343-5335.
The Back to School Blast will take place on August 15th from 2PM - 4PM. This is a collaborative effort with the Presbyterian Community Center, the Rescue Mission, Manna Ministries, Salvation Army, Carilion, and others. Volunteers are needed to direct traffic, distribute school supplies, pass out water/snacks, help with crowd control, etc. Contact Leslie Littlefield at 777-7651 or Cheryl Poe at 982-2911.
Astride with Pride will be hosting a Benefit Horse Show on September 4th. Volunteer needs for this event include gate keepers, concessions, entry booth, runners, etc; 4 hour shifts. Contact Stormie Shelton at 587-0668 or astridewithpride@aol.com.

Astride with Pride needs volunteers for lessons, tack cleaning, and driveway repair.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is in need of male and female volunteers for one-on-one mentoring relationships.
Carilion Hospice is seeking members for a "Threshold Choir" to prepare a capella arrangements of traditional and original songs to share with hospice patients. Wonderful opportunity for vocalists to do something very special and meaningful with their talents. Contact Sue Huntington at 224-4795.
Commonwealth Catholic Charities's Independence for Seniors program is looking for friendly visitors to make weekly contact with homebound seniors. The Supervised Visitation Program is also looking for volunteers to monitor visits of parents and children. The St. Francis House is in need of volunteers to answer phones from 8:30AM - 11:30AM two days a week. Contact Arlene Campbell at 342-0411.
East Mental health Services is in need of volunteers to assist clients with moving.
Friday Night Friends needs volunteers to shadow children with special needs, play board games, gym sports, assist with crafts, etc.

Meals on Wheels is in need of volunteers to deliver hot lunches to homebound seniors. Shifts are available Monday - Friday and take about 1.5 hours. Contact Michele Daley at 345-0451 x3027.
Presbyterian Community Center needs volunteer groups (scout troops, church groups, etc.) to provide help with bi-weekly summer food bank pick-up; volunteers also needed to stock pantry in the afternoons. Volunteer receptionists M-Th 9AM - 12:30PM or 12:30PM - 4PM. Contact Cheryl Poe at 982-2911.
Roanoke City Friends of the Library would like a volunteer to help with recording and manintaing memberships.
Roanoke Valley Alleghany Regional Commission needs a "Bus Passenger Boarding Data Collection Volunteer"! Volunteers need to have flexible schedule to collect passenger boarding data. This is not a survey project, just data collection by observation. Volunteers also needed as planning graphics volunteers and long-range plan proofreaders. Contact Mark McCaskill at 343-4417.

TRUST House would like volunteers to provide life skills education to veterans experiencing homelessness.
