  Between the Covers

between the covers

The gray days of November have crept up on us once again. The bare trees stand like skeletons against the hillsides after falling victim to the relentless winds that stripped them of their autumn glory. A chill runs through one's bones gazing out the window as November reaches for us with her long gray arms. A soft voice whispers to us, the comfort of home and hearth, a warm fire and a good book will chase the dismal day away.

Zero Day by David Baldacci - John Puller, a lone wolf Army Special Forces takes on evil in the backwoods country of West Virginia. A family is slaughtered and he is called in to help with the investigation. Can the son of an Army legend and brother of an accused man serving time in a military prison for treason combine forces with a detective, battling her own demons, and uncover the truth hidden in the hills?

11/23/63 by Stephen King - What if you had the power to change history? King's newest novel, a mere 1,000 pages, introduces us to Jake Epping, an English teacher, where else but in Maine, whose student writes about the horror his father inflected on his family. Shortly after, Jake's friend at the local diner confides that he has a portal to 1958 through one of the doors at the diner. Jake's mission is to go back in time and try to stop the Kennedy assassination. Once again King delivers with a tale sure to entertain.

"V" is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton - Kinsey Millhone is back along with a lot of people who have demons and issues of their own. At the center of it all are a dirty businessman and a heroine just trying to celebrate her 38th birthday.

The Drop by Michael Connelly - Harry is hitting the streets harder since he is being forced to retire in three years. Thrown into his lap are two cases- one- the DNA from a case in 1989 that matches a convicted felon who would have been too young to commit the crime at the time and two- Councilman Irving's son has either been murdered or committed suicide. As Harry probes into each case, he uncovers the possibility of a murderer undetected for 30 years and a political conspiracy that finds him enveloped in the dark history of the police force. Of course we all know that Harry will pull it off, there is no one better.

Some other new releases are: Kill Alex Cross by James Patterson, Out of Oz: The Final Volume in the Wicked Years by Gregory Maguire and Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich.

The Friends of the Library

Halloween cupcakes

More than 75 children and their parents enjoyed the Halloween festivities sponsored by the Friends of the Library on October 28th. The children were thrilled with  the Halloween cupcakes, decorated by the Friends, and the Halloween crafts. Thank you to Boehm's Apple Farm, Black Horse Nurseries and Jim Clark for providing pumpkins for decorating.
