Spirit, that made those heroes dare

To die, and leave their children free,

Bid Time and Nature gently spar

The shaft we raise to them and thee.

Local Artist Matt Blanchfield
"Most artists in their statements about their art venture into idealism, political leanings, the glory of the human spirit, etc. My reason behind my art is simpler: I just like to draw." So says Matt Blanchfield, whose works you can view in the Warren Reading room. Stop in, browse, enjoy and sign Matt's guest book.

Until Tuesday  by Luis Carlos Montalvan -  every once in a while a book comes along that makes you want to slow down and devour every word, careful not to miss a thought or feeling that is being  conveyed.  Until Tuesday tells the story of a Wounded Warrior  and his difficulties as he returns home from the Iraq war and tries to adjust to what we all consider everyday life.  Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and physical wounds, Army Captain Montalvan has all but given up on life, withdrawing from the world.  That is until he meets Tuesday, a golden retriever, that has lost all trust with humans.  Tuesday had been a great therapy dog trained to assist the disabled until a training session went wrong.  This is the story of how two wounded souls come together and heal each other, creating a bond and a new lease on life for both of them.

Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks - a historical novel about Caleb, a Wampanoag native, from Nantucket who despite the conceived image of savagery put upon Indians at the time, becomes the first Native American to graduate from Harvard- in 1665.  The story is told through the voice of Bethia Mayfield, the daughter of the island's minister, with whom Caleb forms a strong bond.  Once again Brooks weaves a sparkling story not only of the friendship between a chieftain's son and a puritan's daughter but also the beauty of the island.
If You Ask Me:(And Of Course You Won't)
by Betty White -  Betty White writes about her views on friendship, her love of animals, television and aging with all the wit one would expect from her.  In her sixth book, she reflects on the past 15 years of her life, an enjoyment for all her fans.

Planning a summer vacation?  Gas prices have you all fueled up?  Why not plan something close to home and explore what your big backyard has to offer?  Two new books at the library to help plan your trip are: Off the Beaten Path in Upstate New York: a guide to Unique Places. It features places of interest and things to do in the Adirondacks, East of the Hudson, Mohawk Valley, Finger Lakes, the Niagara-Allegheny region, and the Catskills.  Fun with The Family Upstate New York: hundreds of ideas for day trips with the kids  by Mary Lynn Blanks has information for all of Upstate New York.  Each chapter includes a quick reference map, icons for easy identification, plus a list of suggested children's books relevant to the area.  From historical attractions, to biking, museums, festivals and food & lodging, plan a fun-filled hour, day, or week for you and your family.
