A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right to bring up children without surrounding them with books.... Children learn to read being in the presence of books. - Horace Mann (1796-1859) Bring a child to the library this month! |

Congratulations Coxsackie Thrillers

Waiting their turn to compete.
On Saturday September 11th the Coxsackie Thrillers won 3rd place in a competition with 21 other teams from the Mid Hudson Library System. Emily Routh, Margaret Benson, Katrina Josberger, Benito Flores, Jordan Mogul, Elizabeth Wallace, Benjamen Pacuk, Nicole Whitbeck, Tara Josberger and Catherine Casey were in the competition. Rebecca Pacuk, a former team member, was the onsite coach. She kept fellow coach, Lily Dayter, away at college, up to date with text messages and photos. High School students, Patrick Benson and Arielle Weinstein were part of the team of volunteers making this event possible. Natasha Yates, a Friend of the Library, was one of three judges. For most of the day there were three battles occurring simultaneously at Hudson High School. Battle of the Books is an amazing competition involving hundreds of volunteers, team members and library staff from Putnam County in the south, to Greene County in the north.

Local volunteers provide amazing programs!

Konoha Tomono-Duval teaching a paper airplane class.
This past summer Konoha and his mom, Yoshimi Tomono, taught two very popular paper airplane classes. RJ Smolinger volunteered his time teaching weekly chess classes at the library. Town Historian, Michael Raush, gave a wonderful program on the history of Coxsackie. We would like to thank them all for sharing their their time and talents. |

Between the Covers A few literary tomes of colorful subjects have been harvested for our shelves. Come in and browse or ask to be placed on the waiting list for some of the following popular titles. At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson - Once again using his sense of humor to make what would seem mediocre enjoyable, Mr. Bryson opens our minds to our own humble abode. He uses his own home as a walking tour, taking us from room to room and explaining the history and events that have led to some of the modern conveniences that we so often take for granted. The Confession by John Grisham - A new legal thriller by the master of them all. A guilty man, who watched while someone else was convicted and sentenced to death for the horrible crime he committed, has a chance to confess. But can he convince the legal system before the wrong man is executed, while trying to outrace death himself? Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow- This book takes the reader through a well written history of our country's first president. Chernow interweaves the more personable side of the great man, his emotions, his faith, and his love for the land, with the great leadership and foresight he possessed for founding our country. Painted Ladies by Robert B. Parker - Fans of the Spencer series will be delighted to read what may be the last in this series since Parker passed away this past January. Rose in a Stormby Jon Katz - This story is presented through the eyes of Rose, a border collie, and the everyday events that shape her life while watching over the farm she has come to call home. She helps her owner through not only the biggest blizzard in decades, but also through the greatest storm in his life as he recovers from the loss of his wife. Jon Katz, owner of Bedlam Farm, from which the story was inspired, consulted with animal behaviorists in order to create this great fictional story. Other new books this month include: The Reversal by Michael Connelly, Naked Heat by Richard Castle ( based on the popular TV series), Promise Me by Richard Paul Evans, Worth Dying For by Lee Child, In the Company of Others: A Father Tim novel by Jan Karon, and Nemesis by Philip Roth.
