The Heermance Memorial Library is participating in "Summer Reading at New York Libraries"  (Make a Splash, Make Waves and Water Your Mind at the Library). A full schedule of events can be found on our calendar. Some of our craft classes are already full, but it's not too late to participate in our Summer Reading Challenge. Last summer, program participants read 925 pounds of books. This year we are trying to beat that total. Anyone 12 or under who reads five pounds of books is invited to our Ice Cream Sundae Party on Wednesday, August 11. The books parents read aloud can be included in the count! Teens who read five pounds of books are invited to a Pizza Party at 3:00 on Friday, August 13. Adults who read five pounds of books will be entered into a drawing for a gift basket. Our Summer Reading Program is made possible with funding from the Friends of the Library.

Sue Story, author of the newspaper column Clutterbusters, will be presenting a workshop on Tuesday, July 13th at PM. Find out what clutter is, why we clutter and how we can mend our ways.

Sue Story began ClutterBusters, an organizing service for businesses and residences, in 2000.  Ms. Story says she discovered a need for such assistance when several of her editing/typing business clients asked if she could help organize their offices, which were often home-based.

She currently teaches basic organizing in the continuing education division of several area community colleges and high schools.

Tumble books

Does your child love the computer but shy away from books? You can introduce your child to the world of literature through your home computer. TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of TumbleBooks - animated, talking, picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you. Tumble books can be accessed through the library web page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Tumble Books icon. All you need is a library card. After your child enjoys a book from the Tumble Books library visit the Heermance Memorial Library and check out the actual book.  While you're here, why not add it to the pounds of books in your child's Summer Reading Program Tally?
Traveling Abroad or Staying Local this Summer?
                                 The library can help!

Whether you plan to travel 3,000 miles away from home or 30, the library has something for you! A new web site devoted to helping you plan, prepare and enjoy traveling is now available through the library's web site: Quick Answers for Patrons on the Go: Travel. Find information on kid-friendly vacation spots, local historic sites, hiking and rail trails in the area, how to get a passport, booking vacations online, how to get through the airport security line faster and so much more!.
Connect with library resources like books and DVDs on travel destinations, downloadable audiobooks for long flights and car rides, and language-learning tools to help you communicate with the locals!
The site was developed with help from library staff around the Hudson Valley who shared the questions they hear most often from library patrons, and we've worked together to share answers so we can all benefit!
So check out Quick Answers: Travel on our
web site today and discover new ways to enjoy the lazy days of summer

Between the Covers
Be sure to stop in at the Library this  month, not only to check out some of our new books, but also to see what we have to offer  with our summer reading program.  This annual event is not just for kids anymore, but includes readers of all ages.

With the onset of those lazy, hazy days of summer, perhaps Life's Too Short to Fold Fitted Sheets: Your Ultimate Guide to Domestic Liberation by Lisa Quinn will have you laughing out loud while suggesting shortcuts for cleaning and entertaining, leaving you  more time to do what you love.
The Shallows: What the Internet  is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr - a thought-provoking look into the world of modern technology and the impact it has on our lives.  Is the worldwide web and the immense quantity of information that constantly confronts us making our ability to think and reason no longer a normal action?
Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War by Karl Marlantes - although the length of this novel may at first make you pause, the subject and storytelling contained within will transport you into the jungle amidst the horrors of war.  The author, a decorated Vietnam veteran himself, has worked thirty years on this volume, already acclaimed to be the epic Vietnam War novel.
The Passage by Justin Cronin - with the craze of vampire novels sweeping the world of literature, this new novel is sure to please. The story is set in a futuristic America with well-developed characterization and a government conspiracy. However, the vampires contained within the story are not your usual breed, but those  of Cronin's own imagining.

War by Sebastian Junger - an account of the fourteen months Junger spent embedded with  a  173rd Airborne brigade in Afghanistan, conveying the pain, trauma, excitement, and intense emotions soldiers face while in the grip of war.
The Island by Elin Hilderbrand -  the perfect beach read.  A steamy novel that takes place in a lovely location with all the problems that confront glamorous women in their everyday lives

   A Friend-ly Update

Scholarship winners
Carol Martin Scholarship winners Jessie Bonilla and Lily Dayter

While the Friends of the Library have given a $500 Scholarship to a high school senior who volunteers at the library for a number of years, we named the scholarship for Carol Martin last fall. Carol Martin formed the Friends and was our first President . She was a long-time librarian and started the Scholarship. With her passing last year, we dedicated the  Scholarship to her.
This year we had two excellent candidates. Lily Dayter was a member of the Battle of the Books Team and went on to coach the team. She was able to develop winning strategies and inspire the team members for three years. Jessie Bonilla has volunteered at the library for the last year. As she learned what the library had available she became a source of advocacy and information to her school teachers regarding library resources.
Our committee awarded Lily Dayter the $500 Scholarship and for the first time, we awarded a 1st runner-up of $250 to Jessie Bonilla. Thank you both for your service and we wish you continued success.
The Friends of the Heermance Memorial Library enjoyed a very busy Spring! Our Coxsackie Cuisine was again a popular and successful fundraising event. We thank all our hosts, guests, and local restaurants for their donations of appetizers and desserts. The Library rooms were a celebration of  spring, reflected both in decor and in Anne D'Arcangelis' lovely art display, "Impressions Far & Near." Our second Plant Swap and Sale went hand in hand with our book sale. Plants  included hosta, dusty miller, cleomes, tomato, globe thistle and various lilies.  All present enjoyed a peaceful evening perusing  plants, books and the Library's beautiful gardens.

The Friends' annual appeal will come out in late July.

Anyone who wishes to join the Friends, please come to our meeting the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm.
