Les Bas Bleus
Bas Bleu - Noun 1. bluestocking - a woman having literary or intellectual interests.
If this describes you, or if you'd like this to describe you, then maybe you would enjoy the book group by this name. We meet every 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Heermance Library to pull apart, discuss and argue over classics of literature. Founded in March of 2009, our reading has ranged from Macchiavelli's political classic The Prince, Shakespeare's lilting A Midsummer Night's Dream and Du Maurier's chilling Rebecca, to the tempestuous pathos of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. We stick to topic by using discussion questions to guide and aid us on our quest. Quite a few of us have longed for exposure to the classics, but needed the accountability (and assistance!) of a book group to keep ploughing through the rich soil of the great works, while others are well-versed from a lifetime of deep reads or perhaps revisiting hazily-remembered favorites of college days .... Whatever your story may be, come and share with us each month. We'd love to welcome you and hear your input on next month's read!

Between the Covers A potpourri of literature awaits the avid reader this month. Come in and browse our shelves, not just for the new, but maybe to find that obscure book that has eluded you for so long. Perhaps you would like to acquaint yourself with one of the characters mentioned below if you haven't already and begin a new reading adventure.
Spoken from the Heart by Laura Bush - a memoir from one our favorite first ladies. Mrs. Bush shares what it was like growing up as an only child, her grief at the loss of her friend in high school to a fatal automobile crash, when she met George W., her career as a librarian, being a mother to her two daughters and her life in the White House with all of its tribulations and grandeur. 61 Hours by Lee Child - Jack Reacher is back in this new novel, the 14th Reacher novel to date, where we find him in South Dakota assisting the local cops with a major Mexican drug cartel. Fast paced and full of action, Reacher followers will also be given a bit more insight into the character of the man himself. Storm Prey by John Sanford- a botched robbery combined with the perpetrators vehicle collision with Lucas Davenport's wife while she is on her way to perform surgery make this another fast paced read for Davenport fans. Blue-eyed Devil by Robert Parker - Since his death in January of this year, Mr. Parker has continued to offer his fans several new novels. The latest in his western series find Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch, gun slinging pals from his previous novel Brimstone, are no longer the law in Appaloosa- they've been replaced by a corrupt sheriff. However they still manage to keep the town safe from an Apache attack and a suspicious dandy that rides into town with a score to settle. Fever Dream by Lincoln Child & Douglas Preston - Oh, what joy, Aloysius Pendergast is back! The best duo writing team is back to offer their fans the 10th novel to feature the peculiar detective, as he enlists the help of his longtime ally Lt. Vincent D'Agosta. Agent Pendergast believed the death of his wife Helen twelve years ago was just a tragedy but after the chance examination of the gun involved things seem to suggest otherwise. As their search for answers takes them from the American Southwest to the heat of Africa, what awaits the reader is sure to be a journey of pure enjoyment. If you have never read any of the Pendergast novels, perhaps it is time! |

A Friend-ly Update
Monthly Meetings The Friends of the Library (the "Friends") monthly meeting occurred on April 14, 2010. The Friends are busy at this time of the year organizing and hosting community outreach activities, such as the Plant Swap and Book Sale to be held simultaneously on June 4,, 2010, our bi-annual bus trip to NYC on April 17, 2010 and Coxsackie Cuisine to be held later this month on May 22, 2010. These events help our neighbors discover what the Library has to offer. If you have interest, energy, ideas, or are just curious, please join us at the Library at 7pm on the second Wednesday of every month.
Plant Swap and Book Sale On June 4th, we will be holding our second annual Plant Swap. Please bring any extra plants to the library to exchange with another plant free of charge. Even if you do not bring any plants, plants will be available for purchase. This year we have decided to combine the Plant Swap with a Book Sale. The gardeners in the family can peruse the plants while the bibliophiles select some gently used volumes for their personal collections. As with nearly all the Friends' events, there will be some delectable goodies to munch on before you leave with plants and books. Coxsackie Cuisine Coxsackie Cuisine, a premier dining experience, will be held later this month on May 22nd. This popular event is already sold out!
NYC Bus Trip Thank you to those of you who joined us on our NYC bus trip last month; your participation made for a good time to be had by all. For those of you who did not join us (and those people who did), please keep an eye on the Friends' Corner for the posting of the date of the Fall NYC bus trip. Thank you all for supporting your local library and your Library's Friends. The Friends have posted a list of "Where Your Contributions Go" on the library website. We hope to see you soon at an upcoming event.
