Fa La La La Baaa

According to ancient legend, all animals can speak human languages on Christmas Eve.

Do you think they can read our books that night as well?  Whether they can or not, as people we are quite lucky that we can enjoy tomes of fact and fiction all year round.  Stop by for some holiday stories, the latest biography, or even just to browse the newspaper, and relish in our ability to
communicate.
O Christmas Wreath, O Christmas Wreath

The Friends of the Library are ready to help you deck your halls.  How, you ask?  With their Silent Wreath Auction!  Held annually during the Christmas by the River festivities, these decorations are all created and donated by members of our community.  This year, they will be on display starting Saturday, December 5th, during the Heermance's regular hours between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, at which time the bidding will begin.  The auction will resume the next day, Sunday, December 6th, at 10:00 am. The excitement begins when the bidding ends at  4:00pm.  Winning bidders who are not at the library at 4pm will be notified by telephone and will have till Tuesday to pick up their wreath Good luck, and happy bidding!

When viewing the wreaths, be sure to stop by and visit the Coxsackie Garden Club table and the Coxsackie Elementary 2nd graders selling note cards to support the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society.
God Rest Ye, Merry Gentle-Wren

.Here is an event you can count on.  Join us Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 pm for the Bird Tally Rally, and learn how to become a part of the National Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count, beginning December 15th.  Each year, the public is invited to become citizen scientists, helping the Society collect data and contributing to ornithological conservatioGentlewrenn.  People of all ages, children included, can take part in this effort.  Think you might be counting the same bird over and over again?  Not sure the difference between a grackle and a grosbeak?  That is what  our Rally is for!  Local expert Rich Guthrie will guide you through some basics, how you can join, ways to keep track in your own backyard, and area field teams you can accompany.

Oh Color, All Ye Faithful

The Heermance Library hosted an acrylics painting course this past October and November. With full registration and a wait-list besides, students had the opportunity to explore the medium and their talents under the guidance of local artist Ruth Leonard.  Seasonal and natural elements were on hand for participants, who ranged from middle schoolers to retirees, to arrange and interpret in paint.   Some examples of their completed works will be on display throughout the month of December, so stop down to take a peek.  This program was made possible with public funds from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Greene County Council on the Arts.

A Friend-ly Update

December ushers in the Friends of the Heermance Library's annual 'Boughs of the Holidays' silent wreath auction.
The Friends will also be selling decorated Stash brand teas, honey sticks, and cards dArt Classuring the Christmas by the River festivities.  We will have free give-aways for each visitor.  We are looking forward to sharing this day with many community organizations, individual vendors, friends, and neighbors. Hope to see you there.

At the Friends meeting in November, we were gratified to hear our Annual Appeal letter had brought in $5,970 from the community. This has been our most successful appeal yet. These are difficult times, and we promise these funds will go to programs and keeping our library services free.
