Feel Better at the Library

October's birthstone is the opal, believed to bring wearers improved health, and increase powers to the eyes and mind.

If you are looking to feel better, see more clearly, or think straighter, we recommend skipping the stone and picking up a good book.  Whether it be for relaxation or facts (or maybe both), we have some devilishly good reads out on display this month...stop by and have a look!

Employee Sandy is the Cat's Meow

We are very excited to welcome home local hero Specialist Seth Stephen and Meow-za!his mother, long-time Heermance employee Sandy Stephen.  She left when her son was injured while serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq.  She has spent the past seventeen months in Washington D.C. as Seth recuperated, a fine example of her devotion to her son.  Despite the distance and personal worries, Sandy continued to help the Heermance from afar, ordering books for many patrons and aiding the staff  in a variety of ways.

She has been away a frightfully long time, so be sure to come say hello.  If you do not know Sandy yet, you have definitely been missing out; be sure to stop by and introduce yourself soon!

Three's the Charm
BOB
Our hearty congratulations to the middle school students of the Coxsackie Thrillers (above) and their coach, senior Lily Dayter (above, last on right), who took third place in the regional Battle of the Books.  They might not look scary, but their trivia abilities are  spine-chillingly good.Toil and Trouble

This annual competition
involves  teams from all across the Mid-Hudson library system reading the same selection of titles over the summer.  Then, in the autumn, they face each other in a contest answering trivia questions based on the books.  The real killer?  Being sure to 'buzz in' before the opposition does!  Anyone who might be interested in joining the Heermance team  for next year should keep an eye out in the spring for recruitment.
Frankly, Co-Greene Has A Lot to Offer

High schoolers and adults are welcome to a free open house presented by ColumFrankly...bia-Greene Community College.  This information session, held Friday, October 16th from 1:00 to 4:00 at the library, will give you the opportunity to find out more about what they have to offer to those looking to earn a degree, change of careers, or simply enrich their minds and learn something new.  A representative will be available to answer any questions about day, evening, or non-credit courses, financial aid, and more.

A Class to Sink Your Teeth Into

Are you inspired by the blood-red leaves of the season, but not sure what to do with this awe?  Then try our Acrylic Painting Class.  Artist Ruth Le ArtisteLeonard will lead the six Saturday meetings from October 17th to November 21st from 9:00 to noon. With local landscapes as your subjects, participants will learn a variety of techniques for using acrylics, one of the easiest and most forgiving artistic mediums.  Composition, form, and other elements of design will also be discussed as you create your work.  The course is free, but    sign-ups are required, so please stop by the library to register.  This class was made possible with public funds from the Decentralization program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Greene County Council on the Arts.

We Are Dying to Have You Vote

An election is held each year to approve the special district library tax and to elect three members to the nine-member board. Catherine Benson, Claudine Serazio-West, and Regina McGrath are running unopposed. Catherine Benson and Claudine Serazio-West are currently on the board, and will be running for subsequent terms.

We would like to thank retiring board member I. Patricia DeLucia, who has donated many hours of her time and expertise helping the library become what it is today. Pat was instrumental in the creation of the special library district.

This year's election is on Tuesday October 20th, from 10am until 9pm at the library. All registered voters in the town of Coxsackie are eligible to vote. Each year the library board and staff struggle to
Vote or Else create a budget that will help the library grow and better serve the residents, while maintaining a very reasonable tax increase for the community. Copies of the 2010 budget are available at the library and on our web page www.hml.lib.ny.us. We would like to thank the residents of Coxsackie for supporting our endeavors and the budget increases in past years. Please remember that this is your library. When you come into vote or anytime let us know how we can better serve you.

A Bewitching Event

Halloween starts early at the HeermancWe've Got You Coverede, as the Silly Witch descends upon the library on Friday, October 30th at 4:30.   Cackle with laughter as our entertainer tells spooky tales and goofy jokes, and doles out a bit of Mischief Night advice.  This event is open to all wee ghoulies and grown goblins, thanks to funding by the Friends, so be sure to stop by and stay for a spell...

A Friend-ly Update

The Friends of the Library have been very busy!  On September 9th, we had Best Friends Foreverour monthly meeting; anyone interested in joining us should know we gather at the library the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

We discussed our upcoming bus trip to New York City on Saturday, November 7th.  It is a great deal at only $35 per person.  The price includes refreshments served on the bus traveling both to the city and on its return.  In fact it is such a good deal that tickets sold out a week after they went on sale.  There will be another trip in April so buy your tickets early.

We also wanted to let everyone know that Box Banks are available at the library to benefit the various children's programs of the Heermance.  Please stop in to pick up one for your child to decorate, and encourage them to share their spare change to help keep the programs active.

The Friends provided refreshments after Carol Martin's memorial service on September 24th.  It was very well attended, and many memories were shared.  The evening was a wonderful way to remember someone who had such a positive impact in our community, and especially on our library.   In her honor, the Friends have renamed our annual award for seniors the Carol Ann Martin Memorial Scholarship.  If you know a high schooler who might be interested in volunteering towards this prize, please contact the library for more information.

On September 26th, we held our first community music event at the library.  Guitarist Ed Wasilewski and vocalist Luis Macia donated their talents to make Jazz Night a successful event.  Please keep an eye on the Friends' Corner at the library for postings on our next music night.

Thank you all for supporting your local library and your library's Friends.  We appreciate all those who attended our events in the past month, and hope to see you at our upcoming programs.

PLEASE NOTE

The Heermance Memorial Library will be closed for Columbus Day, which will be Monday, October 12th.  Regular hours will be held the Saturday prior, and resume the Tuesday after.
