Salutations

'The golden rod is yellow;
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.

By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather
And autumn's best of cheer.'
                                                     ~Helen Hunt Jackson, 1830-1885

According to British folk meteorology, a fair day on the first of September means lovely weather until October.  Let us hope they are right, as this month began under the most glorious conditions.  But nice or dreary, the cooler air and shorter days of fall are, we think, the perfect excuse to curl up with a sweater and a good book.  Stop by and check out some of our displays, browse our shelves, or put in a request for just the right read to transition into the autumnal equinox.
A Job Well Done

Hearty congratulations and thank you to the 118 patrons who participated in the 2009 Summer Reading Program.    Pat PatWe are pleased to announce that Childhood gained control of our trade on the Hudson, having read 589 pounds of books.  Adultia came in a far-behind second, with 224 pounds.  We are delighted at your attempt.  Teenland set a record of their own this year, with more in that angst-begotten group registering to sail the summer reading ship than ever before.  They held their own admirably, in the end reading 112 pounds.  In the end, everyone was a winner.  Stewart's Shops sponsored an ice cream sundae party for the kids, while the Friends funded an adult gift basket and teen pizza party.   Thanks again, and be sure to join us next year!

Here She Comes to Save the Day!

Mighty Mayo is here!  Starting Tuesday, September 8th from 3:30 to 4:30, our very own Homework Helper (aTrain Wreckka the Marvelous Mrs. Mayo) will be back to aid and assist all those in need.   Whether you are struggling in a particular subject, need a wee bit of prodding to get your homework done, or are just looking for something fun to do after school, Mrs. Mayo does it all.  No sign-ups are necessary; just bring your brain, a smile, and your sweet tooth.

Our Shot in the Regionals

Cheer on the Heermance Thrillers on as they throw down the gauntlet at the Mid-Hudson Library System's Battle of the Books Regional Competition on Saturday, September 12th.   The Thrillers are one of twenty-one library-supported teams made up of sixth through ninth graders in the Mid-Hudson region.  The individual groupsWham, Bam, Alakazam! all read the same selection of books, then practice their trivia knowledge of the stories through mock battles amongst themselves.  They then face each other in a marathon duel held each autumn.  Last year, our team came in third.  Can they do it again?  With their rapier-sharp memories and lightning-quick reflexes, they are sure to leave their mark.  Wish them luck!

Celebrate the Life of the Divine Mrs. M

A Memorial Mass for Carol Martin will be on Thursday, September 24th at 7:00 pm.  It will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Coxsackie, followed by a reception, hoLove Yasted by the Friends, at the Heermance Memorial Library.

For those that did not know her, Mrs. Martin was an employee at the Heermance for over a decade, retiring in 2006.  She founded the Friends of the Library, as well as contributed to a significant expansion in our collection.  She was a great lover of people and literature, and was, therefore, the ideal librarian.  She will always be fondly remembered, and greatly missed.

Big Whoopee at the Heermance

Hey, all you hep dames and daddy-os out there, have the Friends of the Library got a special treat for you.   Do you dig the cool tunes of the 1920s?  Then don't miss out on this event, sure to be the bee's knees.  On Friday, September 25th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, the Heermance Library will be one jumpin' joint as we open our pad up for An Evening ofCharleston, Charleston Jazz.   Come hear some jammin' boogie-woogie played by local cool cats Lou Macia and Ed Wasilewski.   Ma-cee-HUH andWasi-WHO-ski, you say?  You mean you didn't catch their beat down at the Blue Water Bistro?  Well, make sure you skeedaddle on down then! Think you don't have enough rubes for such a spiffy event?  No worry- it's free for all.  No need to dress to the ritz in your best zoot suit or flapper outfit; just throw on any ol' glad-rags and come on down for a time that will definitely be the cat's pajamas!

Want a Piece of Our Latest Class?

Perhaps you are a bit of a block-head about quilting, but have always been interested in learning.  Or maybe you are a regular stitcher, looking for some company.  Whether beginner, intermediate, or pro, everyone is inSew What?vited to join our annual October quilting course.  Sign-ups will be at the Heermance Library starting next week, but the classes, taught by Ann D'Arcangelis, will take place at Bethany Village. They commence on October 12th, and run for the next six Mondays between 6:30 and 9:00 pm.

In conjunction with the Hudson Quadricentennial, students will learn the basics of this traditional American craft.  The patterns of early Dutch settlers and their influence in our River communities will be explored.  Emphasis will be placed on color, original design, piecing, applique, and hand-quilting techniques.  Participants can opt to create a table runner, wall hanging, or larger quilt...the latter of which we think is perfect to curl up under with a good book.  All those interested should stop by the library for more information or to sign-up.  These classes are made possible with public funds from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Greene County Council on the Arts.

PLEASE NOTE

The Heermance Memorial Library will be closed for Labor Day, which falls this year on Monday, September 7th.  Regular hours will be held the Saturday prior, and resume Tuesday following.
