Greetings
august adjective inspiring awe or admiration
We would like to dedicate this month's newsletter to a woman who fit the above definition to a tee. Carol Martin sadly passed away on Tuesday, July 28th. She was an employee at the Heermance Memorial Library for over a decade, before reluctantly retiring in 2006. Carol was a great lover of books and people, and passed her enthusiasm for literature on to many patrons. If you were fortunate enough to have known Carol and would like to send condolences to her family, please call or stop by the Library for further information.

A Touch of Local Color
After a hiatus to celebrate our hundredth anniversary, the Heermance Memorial Library is pleased to reinstate its Warren Reading Room art exhibits. From August 1st to October 10th, the works of Luis Macia, a figure and portrait artist, will be on display. Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday, August 1st from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Macia's paintings, drawings, prints, and pastels are predominately portraits of people engaged in everyday activities. They reflect brief, spontaneous moments in real life and relish in the 'normal', qualities reminiscent of the Ashcan School of art. He has an especial interest in depicting the developmentally disabled. Originally from Queens, New York, Macia attended Art and Design High School. After graduating, he took some courses at Queens College and the National Academy with the Art Students League. But it was when serving as a model that he was able to gain access to dozens of artists' studios, learning more techniques, habits, and attitudes than any classroom could have ever taught him. He particularly credits mentors Irwin Greenberg (known affectionately as 'Greeny') and Max Ginsburg for their guidance and generosity.
Macia moved to Coxsackie with his family in 2006. He has become greatly involved in the area's art scene, and has hopes for stronger ties between the many artists and craftspeople in our community, and the public. The first step to this is through interaction in art shows like this, so stop by and check it out.

This Talk is For the Birds
Here is something to really crow about! Join us for a presentation on Thursday, August 6th at 7:00 pm entitled Birds of the Hudson. Local expert Chad Witko will be here to speak about avian species that can be found in the Hudson Valley. He will discuss common and rare varieties, including both the year-round and seasonal residents of each, and point out key characteristics to help you recognize them. Learn how to identify by sight and sound the many varieties around us, and find out some prime spots for catching a glimpse or two. Visit Witko's site for more information on his experience and activities at www.chat-happens.com, and be sure to join us on Thursday.

Chill Out
In most historic Western cultures, August would mark the beginning of the harvest season and the slow progression towards winter. Autumn is certainly in the air, even if the temperature does not seem so just yet. If you are ready for a chill, breeze in for Spooky New York on Monday, Au gust 10th at 7:00 pm, an evening that is certain to send shivers down your back and put goosebumps on your arms! Hear frightful stories set in our own backyard of the Hudson Valley, including the classic fable of Rip Van Winkle. Our 18th-century storytellers are sure to give a haunting performance, so come and enjoy!

Time to Drop Anchor
All good things must come to an end! Did you find your sea legs yet? If not, there is still a wee bit of time before the Summer Reading Program closing event on Wednesday, August 12th at 6:30 pm. All you have to do is read at least five pounds of books...which is really very few, trust us. Stop by the library with your completed tomes by Tuesday, August 11th to weigh in, and then you too can drop anchor for the season the following night. Free ice cream, prizes for all ages, and much more, so do not delay!

It Has Just Been Posted
This month, the Friends of the Library will be mailing their annual membership appeal letter. The Friends have played a vital role in supporting and promoting the Heermance Memorial Library since their inception in the early 1990's. For several years funding from the Friends was the only source for new books. Then, in 1999, the residents of the Town of Coxsackie voted to create a Special Library District, providing tax dollars to support the library, but the Friends have remained essential to the growth and success of the library. The Friends fund the Summer Reading Programs, which have included craft classes, jugglers, magicians and storytellers, all related to the summer reading theme and encouraging children and adults to expand their horizons through books. This year funding from the Friends enabled the library to develop a special collection of books related to the Quadricentennial celebration of Henry Hudson's voyage up the Hudson. In 2008 the Friends funded the library's 100th anniversary celebration at Riverside Park. More than 300 people enjoyed the day. In recent years patrons have been able to order books , music and movies from other libraries through Request -A- Title. Because of increasing use resulting in increasing costs and limited state funding to the library system, the library will be charged 21 cents per item for this service in 2010. Passing this cost along to patrons was a possibility but the Friends have pledged funds to help keep this service free to patrons.
If you don't receive the Friends letter in the mail a copy is available from the library's webpage. Please help the Friends by giving whatever you can. This year online donations will be available through the library's website. With your contribution, films, events, classes, books and more are made available to you and the Coxsackie community. And keep on the look-out for some of Friends' 'give-back' events, which are hosted as their way of saying 'thank you'. For more information on the organization, giving, or their activities, please email friendsofhml@gmail.com or call the library.
|
PLEASE NOTE If you requested an item and have been anxiously awaiting it for what seems an exorbitantly long time, please give us a call. Sometimes computer system errors delete your hold without our knowledge (technology, what a curse sometimes!), and it is necessary to manually re-place it.
