Navigate Your Way with the Heermance

The 2009 Summer Reading Program officially started last week; have you joined the crew?  This year, in honor of the Hudson Quadricentennial, all our events are focused on Henry, the River, and our local environment.  A few of the up-coming activities are highlighted in this newsletter, but stop by the library or check out our online calendar for a full listing and more information on all we have on offer.

In addition to providing you with endless entertainment in the form of booShipks, crafts, and special presenters, the Summer Reading Program also provides you with a little bit of friendly rivalry.  Children, teens, and adults are encouraged register themselves to help their age bracket 'dominate' the Hudson.  Every time you finish reading something, bring it down to the library to have it weighed.  For every five pounds you personally complete, you will get a mark on your own personal 'schooner.'  For every fifteen pounds your group finishes, a vessel representing your age's 'fleet' will be posted on a map inside the south-facing entrance of the Heermance.  Please note that when you read to someone else, it counts for both of you.  Whose crew will be the mightiest?  Help us find out!

Aiming to Please

Last Wednesday, reenactor and former teacher Mr. Ed Fedoryszyn gave a fascinating presentation on the life, liberties, and pursuits of the average Revolutionary War soldier.   This  Wednesday, July 8thCuppa at 10:30 am, come hear him speak about what it was like On the Hudson Homefront.  Although being in the war was tough, life for the domestic contingency certainly was no tea party.  This program is free and open to anyone ages 8 and up, so stop by to see, hear, and learn about all those who attempted to keep the farms and villages running as usual.

Book Clubs This Fun Should Be a Crime

Did you know that the first mystery book was not written until 1859?  Considering the long history of literatureWoman in White, we wonder why other writers were so clueless about the potential popularity of such stories!  Although people have been building on the genre for 150 years now, Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White is still considered one of the finest 'sensation' novels ever.  Members of Les Bas Bleus, the Heermance Library's classics group, are currently inspecting the tale to confirm this superlative.  They will be meeting Wednesday, July 15th at 7:00 pm to discuss their findings, thoughts, and more.  Anyone interested in taking part can ask library staff to order them a copy of the book, and are welcome to come say what they saw in it.  The more the merrier!

Sail-Away Brings You Right Back Home

With so many DVDs in our library system, we  have been spoiled to the point we find movie theatres quite expensive.  And, now that it is high summer and living along the Hudson River as we do, wePopcorn are absolutely eaten alive when we go to the drive-in.  But what is one to do,  when she wants to catch a flick, save a buck, keep her complexion lovely, and do a bit of socializing?     Why, go to Sail-Away Cinema every Friday at 5:00 pm, of course! All our movie selections were filmed or set in the Hudson Valley, and are free and open to the public.  Popcorn is available, or bring your snack...who would have thought you could eat in the library?  Check out our schedule below for titles and descriptions.  Parents, please note the ratings!

Last week, the event premiered with 'The Time Machine' the 2002 film version of the H.G. Wells novel.  It was filmed primarily in Albany, with minor scenes in Schenectady, Troy, and Saratoga.  We will be continuing this week with 'The Emperor's Club', a story about a stuck-in-his-ways classics professor being challenged by one of his pupils in his final year of teaching to think a bit differently.  It is rated PG-13, and was shot at the Emma Willard School and around Troy.

On July 17th, we will be showing Tim Burton's 'Sleepy Hollow.Although rated R, this is a superb adaption of Washington Irving's classic story, known to most  of us here in the Hudson Valley.

An independent film entitled 'Runaway' will be shown on the 24th of July.  It tells the tale of two boys attempting to make a life on their own.  Rated PG-13, it was filmed in Athens, Cairo, and Saugerties.

Our feature on July 31st will be 'Age of Innocence,'  a movie from 1993 based on the Edith Wharton book.  Martin Scorcese's PG flick recreates 1880s Boston in the likes of Albany, Troy, and Kinderhook.

The last free film will be on August 7th, featuring the 2005 reinterpretation of the H.G. Wells classic  The War of the Worlds.   While Tom Cruise might not jump on any couches this time, you can see a lot of local folks jumping of a dock in Athens.

We hope you will join us for one, two, or all our features!

Get Yourself a Hudson River School Education

Who ever heard of a school that never awards any degrees?  In art history, significant periods or groups are often called 'schools'...sounds a bit more Coleintellectual than 'clans.'  On Wednesday, July 15th at 6:30 pm the Heermance Library will be hosting Gregory Rosenthal of the Thomas Cole National Historic Site for a discussion on Cedar Grove and Artists on the Hudson.  Cole was considered the founding painter in the Hudson River School, a group of artists whose works were heavily influenced by the nature and beauty of our fair valley.  This event is free and no registration is required.  So plan to come and learn more about the first truly American  art movement and their Den Father.

Wii-Ha!

Ever hear of 'River Dance?'  That is precisely Dance, Dance!what will be going on here at the Heermance each Tuesday from 2:00 to 3:00 pm between July 7th and August 4th with our Wii on the Water activity.  This is certainly not the Irish jigs we know you are envisioning, but an hour of 'Dance, Dance Revolution,' Wii Sports, and more.  Everyone ages 12 and up is invited to walk (or boogie) down every week to join us; no registration required.

PLEASE NOTE

Some of our Summer Reading Programming does require sign-ups, so please stop down for more information!
