Greetings! The merry month of June is thought to possibly derive its name from the Roman Junius, a family name related to juvenis, meaning young. It marks the beginning of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, which this year falls on the 21st. What do all of these things have in common? For the Heermance Library, they mean the beginning of the Summer Reading Program for the young and young-at-heart. Check out our article below for more information, and do not forget to read about all the other events we have going on until the official kick-off.

Stories and Surprises on Sunday
This Sunday, June 7th, from 11:00 to 3:00 at the Catskill Point, will be the third annual Greene County Libraries Expo. A wide variety of new and used books, audios, and movie s, as well as a small selection of rare books, will be available for sale to benefit individual local libraries, including your very own Heermance Memorial. But wait-- there's more! Music will be going on all afternoon, as well as face-painting and sign-ups for raffles. Jester Jim will be performing starting at 1:00, and there will be food for purchase. Admission is free, so plan on joining us.

Feeling Fine at the Library Not to brag, but we know we have lots of good books in our collection. So good, sometimes you would love to keep them forever. And quite often, patrons inadvertently do. Have you perhaps found one of our items, but feel a bit embarrassed about bringing it back? When it is goodness-kno ws how overdue, it is not only a hindrance on your conscience, but also a potential detriment to the thickness of your wallet. Have no fear, we are here to help put your mind and wallet at ease! It is once again Fine Free Days at the library. Between June 1st and June 13th, bring back any overdue materials, along with some items for our local food pantry, and your fines will be waived. It does not matter how long the materials have been in your possession, nor how high the fees are that you might have incurred; we just really want our great books back. The food pantry is currently in need of muffin and cake mixes; pancake mix and syrup; canned fruit; canned tuna; coffee; tea; shampoo and conditioner; and household cleaners. Please no used, opened, or expired items, or anything in glass containers. We cannot waive fines for lost-and-never-found items, or materials checked out at another library. Take advantage of our brief amnesty period today.

A Classic Pick, Frankly
Who could have guessed that the first true horror novel was to be written by a rig ht and proper Englishwoman? Mary Shelley was barely nineteen years old when she made her literary debut in 1818. Her book received almost immediate public success, and the story continues even today to have a significant iconographic impact in our society. Everyone knows the tale in some capacity; any clue? It is Frankenstein! This month, Les Bas Bleus, the Heermance Library's classic books group, will be discussing the 'Modern Prometheus' at their meeting on Wednesday, June 17th at 7:00 pm. For anyone who has not read the original telling, it is definitely worth your while, and the club's conversation will certainly help your understanding of the story and its influences. If you are interested in taking part, just ask the library staff for more information and to order you a copy of the book. |
Navigate Your Way to the Library
This summer, in honor of the Hudson Quadricentennial, the Heermance Library is hosting a variety of river -related events and activities in conjunction with our Summer Reading Program. Join the crew for the kick-off event on Friday, June 19th at 6:30 pm, at the Riverside Park in Coxsackie. Get your starter bags and come see the Magic Trunk Ventriloquist perform...who said that? If you cannot make it, do not fret! Information and an abridged calendar of events will be available at the front desk and on our web page all month long, and bags will be on hand after the 19th. After the kick-off, our next official event will be July 1st at 10:30, a presentation all about Weapons, Rivalry, and the Revolution. There are no sign-ups, and everyone 8 years old and up is invited to attend. And this is just the tip of the jib. Each week we will be having crafts for children ages 5-8, 9-12, and teens to enroll in, as well as 'Sail-Away Cinema,' a series of movies in which some portion was filmed in, or whose stories are based in, the Hudson Valley. Yes, the list goes on, but you will have to stop by for the rest! Of course, the mainsail of the program is reading. See how much 'cargo' weight of books you get through, and join the battle between children and adults to find out who can 'carry' the biggest load up the Hudson by August. Check out our special displays, explore the shelves yourself, and do not hesitate to ask for someone to point you in a particular direction. Navigate your way to the Heermance to start your summer adventures!

PLEASE NOTE The Marvelous Mrs. Mayo, our very own Homework Helper, will be taking a summer holiday along with her pupils. Her last day is June 18th, so if you need help finishing those final projects or preparing for any last tests, be sure to stop by before then!
