Plant Swap Will Be Sow Much Fun
Join the Friends of the Heermance Memorial Library for the first annual plant swap and sale Friday, May 15th from 6 to 8 pm. Bring vegetables, flowers, or any other horticultural excess you might have to trade, or come browse and purchase what you need at a minimal cost. While you are here, visit with Chris and Samantha Kemnah from Otter Hook Farms. They will be sharing information about community supported agriculture (CSA) and the New Baltimore Farmers' Market, which will be reopening again in May. Be sure to purchase a raffle ticket or two for a garden-themed gift basket, and enjoy a few refreshments.

Savory Surprises Await the Bold
Do you like to eat? Do you enjoy meeting new people? If so, we have an event for you. On May 30th, the Friends of the Heermance Memorial Library will host their ninth annual Coxsackie Cuisine. We are looking for hungry patrons interested in purchasing tickets to this event. So grab a significant other, family member, or friend, and stop by to purchase your tickets for this event. As a guest, you will begin your evening at the Library, sampling a variety of delicious hor d'oeuvres. You and your partner will randomly draw your dining location, then set out for your destination. After enjoying a meal that always exceeds expectations, you will return to the Heermance for dessert. Tickets are sold in pairs, and the cost is $45 per person. Bas Bleus for the Bookish
Les Bas Bleus, the new Heermance Library book group focusing on the classics, held their first discussion on Wednesday, April 15th at 7 o'clock in the evening. The ebullient dialogue on their first selection, Jane Eyre, continued well past the public closing hour of 8 pm, and the group has decided to continue t heir conversation at their next meeting, on Wednesday, May 20th at 7:00. At this gathering, they will be looking in-depth at the time period in which the book was written and published, covering around 1840 to 1860. The next selection is Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, which the group will start talking about on June 17th. If you are interested in taking part in this stimulating and exciting group, just ask the library staff for more information and to order you a copy of the novel. It is a great way to read those classics you might not tackle on your own, as well meet new people in our community. |
Eagle Scout Soars Beyond Expectations
The Heermance's newest pride and joy is not a signed copy of the latest best- seller. In fact, it is not even something you can check out or even hold in your hands. It is th e new circulation desk, which patrons have been admiring and staff has been delighting in since its installation in mid-March. It is an amazing piece of craftsmanship, custom-built to our very particular (and rather fussy) specifications, but what is most remarkable is that is was made by a local fifteen-year-old. Andrew Pacuk, looking for a community service project to complete his Eagle Scout badge, approached the Heermance in the autumn and asked if there was anything he could do for us. We jumped on the offer, and, as Andrew quickly found out, his help was going to be more than just the usual volunteers tasks. His personal commitment, as well as the willingness of his father, master carpenter Matthew Pacuk, to guide him, made our dreams for a new desk a suddenly-achieveable goal. In addition to this project, we asked if he could create shelving in the wall niche beside the desk. Both were done with a professionalism beyond our expectations and Andrew's young age. Funding for materials came from the Friends of the Library and from a Local Initiative Grant from Assemblyman Tim Gordon, and Creative Kitchens in Glenmont kindly provided the desktop at cost. Our greatest thanks to Andrew and Matthew Pacuk for our very efficient and professional new furniture. Be sure to stop down and take a look! |
In a Rather Embarrassing Situation?
Would you like to start using the library again, but are embarrassed about that long-overdue book or movie you found while you were spring-cleaning? Did your children forget to return the materials they borrowed for a report they were doing last autumn? Or maybe you cannot even remember when the item first entered your home...all you know is, that it is supposed to go back to the Heermance! Good news~ between June 1st and June 13th, we will be holding Fine Free Weeks. Bring back any overdue materials along with items for our local food pantry, and your fines will be waived. Everyone wins~ your record will be clear, we will have our items back on our shelves to share with others, and those in need right here in town will be provided with a few necessities. The food pantry is currently in need of muffin and cake mixes; pancake mix and syrup; canned fruit; canned tuna; coffee; tea; shampoo and conditioner; and household cleaners. Please no used, opened, or expired items, or anything in glass containers. We cannot waive fines for lost items, or items checked out from another library.
