Greetings!

Welcome to Step by Step's first ever e-newsletter.  Some of you may have already received this Issue, but we decided to resend it with a tricky new link to view it in a webpage (see top) in case you had trouble viewing it in your e mail before.

Here are some of the many highlights of our efforts- this issue we focus in particular on the organizing work of some of the 21 VISTAs we place through Fayette, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan and Mingo counties. We look forward to sharing the stories, ideas and concerns of the communities we serve with you from outreach to expectant parents through preschool, school age, after school and summer programs, to youth and parent leadership.

Hopefully you are able to see the links and photos in this e-newsletter (if not, make sure you chose "display images" above).  Clicking on these items will take you to full articles, photo galleries, and even a few videos.  We are excited about the interactivity that an e-newsletter option provides, as well as the paper that will be saved!

Step by Step Takes on Bullying
Tonya Huff is a local mom, and current Step by Step VISTA, who has been fighting for bully awareness and prevention for over three years now.

For Huff, this fight began when her son was aggressively bullied in school for over a year.  "My son was in a school that did not make a big stand against bullying and felt it was just 'kids being kids'," Huff said.  Now he is in a school that doesn't tolerate bullying, so says Huff, "I have experienced what it is like to deal with bullying and seen the difference it makes when a child has a system that takes a stand against bullying."  Adding,  "Once children realize that adults, communities or whatever system they are in will not tolerate bullying, it helps it to end."

"When I saw the dumpster, I lost my breath," explained Terry St. Germain, who is a Resource Development VISTA at the East End Family Resource Center, a Step by Step partner.  "I was expecting a normal sized dumpster, and then we got to the site, and there was a construction sized dumpster overflowing with books."  Read full article...
