It's been an exciting month and we are exceptionally thankful for our wonderful volunteers, who have made  expanded ReStore hours possible.  We are now open daily, M-F, from 9-5, andhope to offer Saturday hours soon.  We are sad to see one of our key starting volunteers, Marlena Ramey, move on but are grateful for her service in getting us started.  We also welcome Daniel Haynes and Sheena Publico, both through the First-to-Work program.  Special thanks to continuing volunteers, Carolyn Hedberg, Adrienne Eisele, and Terrence Kawata for your ongoing service.  Your ideas, creativity, hard work, and customer service keep us growing!

We'd also like to thank Real Estate Agent Kimiko White and her broker, Jay Spadinger, of Rainbow Properties, who are donating a portion of every sale to our affiliate.  We really appreciate this generosity and commitment, especially in the current economic climate.  Every dollar makes a difference!

In addition, we'd like to thank Derek Yoshimura of Jenco Pacific, Inc. Construction Group, for donating a house full of recycled windows from a remodeled residence.  Contractors, homeowners--we always appreciate your leftovers or gently used donations to better serve customers while helping to divert waste from our landfill.

Finally, we'd like to thank all of you readers, donors, and customers
for your continued patronage at the ReStore.  Keep spreading the word and check us out often for tools, building materials, furniture, home goods, and now plants.  We get new items almost everyday.

In other news:
Build-a-Thon 2009
is coming up on Saturday, August 15 and we are excited to be working on a construction project again. Please consider forming a team with your coworkers or civic club to be a Build-a-Thon sponsor that day.  Call or email us for a sponsorship packet.  We'll give you free tshirts, hats, lunch, some great photo opportunities, and some great memories, while building yet another affordable house.

We're also getting ready for our annual Walk-a-Thon, scheduled for Saturday, August 22.  This popular fitness event is another fun way to support affordable housing.  Gather friends and family and form a walking team.  Sign up online todayto let us know you'd like to be a walker.  Sponsorship packets will be available in early July.  80% of every dollar raised goes directly to construction and the remaining 20% is used for other Habitat services and operations.
Plant a Home Today!

Plant Donations/Purchases Raise Money for Homes
Gardeners of East Hawaii: this is your chance to literally "plant" an affordable home.  While construction may be some people's forte, Hilo Habitat's ReStore is now seeking gardeners who want to donate plants for sale in the ReStore.  We are looking for vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, flowers, shrubs, and even water- rooted cuttings of ti leaf, dracena, or other large items.  Thanks to one of our regular volunteers with plant expertise, Carolyn Hedberg, for helping us get started!

Free Pots & Mulch Make Plant Donations Easier
If you're interested in promoting waste diversion as well as providing plant donations, consider growing your vegetables or flowers in egg cartons, tofu tubs, or other reusable containers.  Ask your neighbors to save their "throwaways" or recyclables as well.  Also, compost to help nurture your plant donations is available free of charge at the Hilo landfill.

Food, Flowers, Cuttings Welcome & Available
Please bring your plant donations to the ReStore today.  Shoppers, stop by and see what we have.  Our goal is to develop a steady supply of healthy plants, especially food items, to help build affordable homes.  As a reminder, 50% of every dollar spent at the ReStore goes directly to construction and the other 50% is used to provide family support, education, partnerships, and support operations.

Have Other Donations?
If you don't have plants, we always appreciate other new or gently used building materials, tools, home goods, furniture, or similar items at the ReStore.  Questions?  Please call us at 808-935-6677 or email us.
