ARTIST PETER WATTS ENVISIONS THE HERRING RIVER ESTUARY AFTER RESTORATION
Peter Watt, Wellfleet artist, has created a large oil painting that interprets a vision of what the Herring River estuary will look like after the restoration is complete. This very large painting will be available in smaller version prints this summer when Watts has an exhibit of his work at the Wellfleet Library, date to be determined.  In addition, the original will be displayed at our August 16 annual meeting and prints will be available for purchase.

Environmental studies are underway and a proposed restoration plan is scheduled to be presented at public meetings in early 2012.

Each group or individual will present a short slide show and information about the open space that they work to protect.  There will be music, art, refreshments and other pleasures for guests of all ages.  Please join us for a look at the importance of open space to us all.

Herring River Paddle, Route 6 to the Dike:

Saturday, June 18, Rain Date, Sunday, June 19

On June 18, at 1:00 PM, we will meet at the put-in just south of the river crossing under Route 6 and on the west side of the highway.  John Portnoy will be on the highway shoulder with his truck and couple of boats as a landmark.  After shuttling a couple of cars to the dike, we will all embark at Route 6 for a two-hour paddle interspersed with brief talks about the estuary's natural and cultural history, and discuss the likely effects of planned tidal restoration.  At the dike, we will carpool back to Route 6, get our vehicles, and then retrieve boats at the dike.  It's advisable to bring insect repellent for mosquitoes.

Contact us at info@friendsofherringriver.org to sign up for the trip and receive directions on the launch meeting place.
HERRING COUNT UNDERWAY

Herring Counters have been very committed this spring.  Our data is provided every week to Dr. Joann Muramoto, Association to Preserve Cape Cod.  We will let you know the results of our count when the data is analyzed.  Thanks to all of our volunteers and to John Riehl and John Duane for their assistance.
