June is upon us and the summer beckons. This year we are offering a number of ways to get you close to the Herring River so you can see for yourselves the impact of the degradation of tidal rivers and salt marshes and what restoration means. We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events as we fulfill our mission of education and outreach. Let us hear from you. Lisbeth Wiley Chapman, editor beth@friendsofherringriver.org |

THANKS TO ALL THE HERRING COUNTERS
| | 2010 Herring Count Finished May 31
Twenty volunteers participated as citizen scientists in our 2010 Herring Count, coordinated by Wellfleet Herring Warden Jeff Highes. Anecdotally, after two years of counting, it seems that we are likely a night run, as the herring had a habit of sleeping in judging from the statistical zeros that many of the early morning counters logged. Special thanks to John Riehl whose leadership in planning an excellent training program with relevant speakers kept us on track, and John Duane who coordinated our schedules and helped us keep the count slots covered.
As a reminder, if you have not submitted your data to Dr. Jo Ann Muramoto at APCC, please do so immediately by e-mailing her at jmuramoto@apcc.og.

| SEE A RESTORATION UNDERWAY | Tour of Hatches Harbor Planned for Saturday, June 19
On June 19, a tour of the Hatches Harbor salt marsh restoration, a Cape Cod National Seashore project begun in 1998, will begin at 10 a.m. at the National Seashore's Provincelands Visitor Center in Provincetown. We will then carpool to the small parking lot at the access road for Hatches Harbor.
John Portnoy, ecologist for more than thirty years with the Cape Cod National Seashore, will lead the tour and point out the changes that have occurred at Hatches Harbor since the tidal flush was returned to the area twelve years ago. Truro and Wellfleet selectmen will be invited as well as the Conservation Commissions and Open Space Committees in both towns.

VISIT THE RIVER UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL |
| Kayak/Canoe the Herring River With Us Thursday, September 9
A kayak/canoe trip from Rt. 6, Wellfleet, to the dike at Chequessett Neck Road will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9. Designed for experienced kayakers, the trip will include two portages, one at Bound Brook and one at High Toss Road, as well as a rigorous take out at the Dike near Chequesset Neck Road. This is a 2-3 mile paddle and will take 2-3 hours.
On this trip we
will pass through a variety of human-altered habitats, ranging from swamp
forests to shrub thickets to dense stands of exotic plants, where there once
was 1100 acres of coastal tidal marsh.
The effects of historic alterations to the estuary, and the expected
benefits of tidal restoration, will be discussed along the way. Participants will bring their own kayaks or canoes.
Please e-mail your interest and your phone number to Don@friendsofherringriver.org. More details will be announced on August 17 at the Friends Annual Meeting.
