Masthead photo: Don Palladino, taken during last year's Herring Count at our Count site near the corner of Black Pond Road and Old Kings Highway, Wellfleet.

As the year progresses, we offer you two opportunities for hands on experiences as we prepare for the Herring River Restoration.  We will hold a training session for Herring Counters and Jeff Hughes is offering a Boy Scout group hands on experiences on the River and could use some assistance.  Let us hear from you.

Training for Herring Count - March 31
URGENT NEED FOR COUNTERS

2010 Herring Count

We are pleased to sponsor the 2010 Herring count, coordinated by the Association to Preserve Cape Cod and Herring Warden Jeff Hughes.

The kick-off meeting is on Wednesday, March 31 at 10 am at the Wellfleet Library, 55 West Main St., Wellfleet.

In addition to training volunteers for the count this year, we plan to make this an educational experience to learn more about herring and our experience last year.  Phil Brady of the Division of Marine Fisheries will talk about herring and their conservation status. Jeff Hughes. Wellfleet Herring Warden, will speak on his experiences on the Herring River, and John Riehl, a member of the Friends of Herring River Board, will conduct the training session.  We may also visit the counting site.

We had a great count last year - over 30,000 herring estimated - and very appreciative of the volunteers who made the count a success.

If you were with us last year we hope you can help us again with the count, and additional volunteers are always welcome.

If you wish to volunteer, contact John Duane by email at JohnDuane@comcast.net  to sign up.

In addition you may contact John with any questions, and to confirm participation the training event on March 31.

And for all you birders out there, don't forget that Steve Broker saw a Prothonatary Warbler and Redstarts flitting in the high branches of nearby trees  in early May at the herring count site.  That should be incentive for you to sign up for some slots.  Ginie Page of Wellfleet  immediately posted the warbler on www.massbird.com, and by afternoon there were birders from all over the area visiting and hoping for a glimpse.

Boy Scouts Learn About the Herring River and Importance of Salt Marshes
A Boy Scout  brush cutting work party will take place beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Saturday the 27th meeting at the intersection of Old County Road and Bound Brook Island Road.  Kudos to Jeff Hughes for all his work in coordinating this and working to make it both a productive and educational day.  Well done Jeff!

Barbara Dougan, a Cape Cod National Seashore educational specialist  will discuss the water test the Scouts will learn to do, what they are testing for and why.  She will also compare a core sample from a healthy salt marsh with one of a drained and diked old salt marsh that is now a fresh water marsh.

Jeff will discuss the life history of herring, and how they impact several environments from the fresh water ponds, fresh water marsh, salt water marsh, Cape cod bay and the Atlantic ocean.

At 2:30, the group will move to the Great Island Marsh, remove litter and find out about this special place.

Thanks to Arnie and Mike from Americorps for supplying gear.

We hope to provide pictures in our next newsletter.
Volunteer Wish List Gets Longer

Our wish list includes someone to take the lead on historic research that pertains to the Herring River Estuary.  A great deal has been unearthed by John Portnoy and Jeff Hughes, but we need someone to continue their good work.

We are still looking to increase our cache of historic photos of the Herring River Estuary.  If you or your family have any photos that depict any family or commercial activities on the Herring River we would be grateful to be able to add them to our collection, no matter the period, but of course, early 20th century would be ideal.

Thanks to David Kew, a member of Friends, for locating photos, now on our website, of the dike groundbreaking in 1908.
We Want to be Responsive to Your Interests
The Board wants to hear from you about your specific interests.  Below are several ideas to get you started.  Please let us know if any or all of these possible events would be of interest to you and your family.  You can contact us at info@friendsofherringriver.org.
  1. New  talks and tours about the history and commerce on the Herring River Estuary.
  2. Information about other restoration projects on the Cape and their success.
  3. Kayak and canoe tours of different parts of the river.
  4. Trips to discuss the flora and fauna of the estuary before the diking, after the diking, and what can be expected in the future.
