Masthead photo: November Mist -- looking south over the Herring River Estuary from hill on Old County Road, Wellfleet.

We greet the New Year with great enthusiasm as the volunteers of the Friends of Herring River work to support the Herring River Restoration Project located in Wellfleet and Truro, Mass.  Preparing for the restoration requires thoughtful and careful scrutiny of all of the ramifications to the future of the estuary, its impact on Wellfleet Harbor and Cape Cod Bay, and of course, the needs of the stakeholders.  We will cover the important news and events that are relevant in this newsletter and on our  website.  Let us hear from you.

New Photo Gallery on the Website
If you have not visited our website recently, please check out the photo gallery.  Created by Don Palladino, our president and web master, we now have the opportunity to post pictures of the Herring River Estuary that are taken by our Friends.  Please submit your pictures to info@friendsofherringriver.org with a specific description of the view that the pictures show.
Astronomical High Tide, January 1 and 2, 2010
We had an excellent, daylight look at the Chequessent Neck Dike during an astronomical high tide just before noon a.m. on January 1 and again on January 2, 2010.  The tide was high enough to completely obliterate the parking area on the west side of the gut, as well as to nearly cover the fence at the fishing spot on the south side of the dike.  The amount of water flowing to the upside of the dike at high tide was ferocious.  The swan couple, their five cygnets, and numerous Brants behind the sandbar were protected from the wild water.  See pictures on the Website.
We Want to be Responsive to Your Interests
The Board wants to hear from you about your specific interests.  Below are several ideas to get you started.  Please let us know if any or all of these possible events would be of interest to you and your family.  You can contact us at info@friendsofherringriver.org.
  1. New  talks and tours about the history and commerce on the Herring River Estuary.
  2. Information about other restoration projects on the Cape and their success.
  3. Kayak and canoe tours of different parts of the river.
  4. Trips to discuss the flora and fauna of the estuary before the diking, after the diking, and what can be expected in the future.
We Need Leads on Historic Photos of Herring River
We are looking to increase our cache of historic photos of the Herring River Estuary.  If you or your family have any photos that depict any family or commercial activities on the Herring River we would be grateful to be able to add them to our collection, no matter the period, but of course, early 20th century would be ideal.

Thanks to David Kew, a member of Friends, for locating photos, now on our website, of the dike groundbreaking in 1908.
