Friends of Herring River
First Annual Meeting -
August 18 - 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, August 18, Friends of Herring River will conduct its annual meeting at the Wellfleet Council on Aging, 715 Old King's Highway, Wellfleet.  The short election of officers and business meeting begins at 4:30 p.m.  The informational program begins at 5:00 p.m. promptly and featured speakers include:

Dale Donovan, Chair of Wellfleet Board of Selectmen, will speak on the Wellfleet's support and involvement.

Gary Joseph, chairperson of the Herring River Restoration Committee and other committee members will provide an update on the progress of the joint state/federal Environmental Review Process currently under way.  Each member will  briefly explain their agency's role and then there will be several short presentations on the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process, the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) process and a discussion of where we are now.

There will be a demo on the hydrodynamic model showing sample tidal effects in the estuary, and finally the role of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) as project coordinator will be explained.

"The restoration of the Herring River estuary is a critically important initiative to preserve the natural beauty and resources of Wellfleet and Truro for us, our children and grandchildren," says Don Palladino, President of the Friends of Herring River.  "The degradation of the current river and salt marsh estuary is a blatant mistake made over 100 years ago that can now be corrected, with benefits for the whole community," says Dr. John Portnoy, a member of the board of the Friends of Herring River.

The public is most welcome.  Refreshments will be served.
