Truro Open Space Committee Discusses Restoration with Abutters - Thursday, August 6
|

The Truro Open Space Committee will host a public meeting with the Friends of Herring River on Thursday, August 6 at the Truro Public Library, Library Lane, Truro from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Invitations were mailed to all the Truro estuary abutters and the public is also welcome. Information about the proposed restoration of tidal flow in the Herring River will be presented. Portions of the Herring River's large estuary extend well into South Truro in the Ryder Beach area. Don Palladino, Dr. John Portnoy and Charleen Greenhalgh will be featured speakers. Friends' membership information will be available.

Walking Tour of Truro's Herring River Estuary at Ryder Beach - Friday, August 7, 8:00 a.m.

On Friday, August 7, there will be a walking tour into parts of the estuary near Ryder Beach, Truro, for a close-up look and on-site explanation led by Dr. John Portnoy. Participants can park at the Ryder Beach Parking Lot. Parking permission placards will be available for automobiles without Truro beach stickers allowing parking at Ryder Beach from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday only, by permission of the Board of Selectmen.

Friends Have Booth at WNRTA Annual Meeting Monday, August 10 -- 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Friends of Herring River will make information available to participants of the Wellfleet Non-Resident Taxpayer Association (WNRTA) at their first "Meet the Non-Profits Night." The event will be held at the Wellfleet Council on Aging, Old County Road. Attendees will be able to look at maps of the Herring River estuary, both before the dike was created, and after, as well as well as discuss the project with Don Palladino and Beth Chapman.
This is WNRTA's annual membership meeting. It will be a social format where members and the community at large will be invited for refreshments and the chance to talk with some of the most active non-profit organizations in town.

Friends of Herring River First Annual Meeting - August 18 - 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, August 18, Friends of Herring River will conduct its annual meeting at the Wellfleet Council on Aging, Old County Road. The short election of officers and business meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. The informational program begins at 5:00 p.m. promptly and featured speakers include:
Dale Donovan, Chair of Wellfleet Board of Selectmen, will speak on the Wellfleet's support and involvement.
Gary Joseph, chairperson of the Herring River Restoration Committee and other committee members will provide an update on the progress of the joint state/federal Environmental Review Process currently under way.
"The restoration of the Herring River estuary is a critically important initiative to preserve the natural beauty and resources of Wellfleet and Truro for us, our children and grandchildren," says Don Palladino, President of the Friends of Herring River. "The degradation of the current river and salt marsh estuary is a blatant mistake made over 100 years ago that can now be corrected, with benefits for the whole community," says Dr. John Portnoy, a member of the board of the Friends of Herring River.
The public is most welcome. Refreshments will be served.
