Welcome to the first newsletter from the Friends of Herring River. Our goal, both in this newsletter and with our new web site (www.friendsofherringriver.org), is to keep you informed about every aspect of the restoration of the most impacted estuary on the East Coast, our Herring River watershed in Wellfleet and Truro. We hope that you will help us by submitting suggestions about issues and topics you would like to see covered here.
The science has been proven feasible for this restoration. Now it rests with all of us to find the community, political and financial will to get the job done. We are depending on your interest and support every step of the way.Contact: Lisbeth Wiley Chapman, editor beth@friendsofherringriver.org

501 (c)(3) Non-Profit Status Application in Process
The Friends of Herring River, a new non-profit group, announced its formation at the Fifth Annual Wellfleet Harbor Conference held November 15, 2008.
Application has been made for formal recognition as a Massachusetts 501(c)(3) non-profit entity and it is expected that such recognition will take place in early 2009. Dedicated to restoring the ecological integrity of Wellfleet and Truro's Herring River watershed, the organization will encourage volunteers, serve as an information source on estuarine restoration, and provide fund raising efforts.
"The Herring River Technical Committee has proven that the science will work. We can change over 100 years of damage caused by the restriction of salt water tidal flow to over 1000 acres of watershed," says Don Palladino, Chair of the Board of Friends of Herring River.
The organization will reach out to like-minded citizens who understand the importance of restoring one of the largest impacted estuaries in New England. "Improving the health of Wellfleet Harbor's marine life, shellfish, and recreational opportunities through a healthy estuary's salt water tidal flow will require the combined will of individuals, local, regional and national groups, volunteers, shellfish and fin fish men and women, governmental officials and scientists," added Palladino.
