Sheep Having No Shepherd

John 10:1-21

"I am the good shepherd". What does that even mean today? Especially to a culture that is independent and wandering without any real direction or purpose. Does this declaration from Jesus still bear weight and have influence today?

Jesus comforted his followers in John 10 by affirming to them that not only was he the door for the sheep by which they and each of us could enter the Kingdom of God, but he further said that he is the Good Shepherd. He was the shepherd of the flock that he was speaking to and of all who would enter in through the door.

His desire and passion to pastor their lives was obvious and bore distinct marks that only a true shepherd will exhibit. He was committed to his flock. He is committed to his flock. He still shepherds his people today. He shepherds you and me through His Word, through men whom he has called to feed his flock and who are willing to be lead by the Spirit the way he was.

On more than one occasion, the scriptures state that Jesus was moved with compassion as he watched the people navigating daily life. He was moved because he was aware that they were like sheep having no shepherd. No one leading them. No one moving them toward the Father. No one feeding them that which would answer their hunger and quench their thirst.

He was that food. He was that water and he was that Shepherd. He still is is that food, water and caring pastor who with faithful intercession prays accurate and active words over each sheep in his care.

The more you and I spend time with our heavenly shepherd through his word, prayer, worship, and fellowship with others, the more you and I will develop a keen ear to hear, know and follow the shepherd of our soul. We will listen to and follow no one other than him, the chief, great and good shepherd.

We must also pray that the Lord would continue to raise up faithful men who would be willing to feed the flock of God as he does. Many times with minimal reward and compensation but in fulness of joy. Knowing this - that God is faithful to finish in each one what he has begun. Yes, this current culture can be pastored. He will never cease to look for the sheep that is lost.

Praise Him!!!
