Healing the Blind
John 9:1-42
In this passage, Jesus heals a blind man in a most unorthodox manner. He spits on the ground, makes a mud ball, places it in the man's eye, and tells him to go wash in a local pool. The purpose here is not for you and I to completely understand why Jesus did this as much as it is the response of those who observed.
I was placing a small order on Amazon for an e-book when I noticed a forum against everything Christian. Person after person was commenting that the word Christian should be removed from specific categories. The venom that was being expressed was obvious. The world hates Jesus.
Why? Because men love darkness rather than light. In this passage, Jesus stated that while he was in the world, He was the Light of the world. Now, after his resurrection and ascension, He has given you and I that responsibility. Light in darkness.
Jesus brought a man out of the darkness of blindness. His eyes were open so he could see the light of life who healed him and the light of everyday life that he had been unable to see up to this point.
Jesus brought light to the dark religious system by showing them they were in darkness because they were spiritually blind regarding who He is.
Blindness and darkness are a reality as much today as it was that day when Jesus healed that blind man. In fact, according to Isaiah, darkness will become exceedingly darker as time moves closer to the return of Jesus.
Blindness and darkness are forever linked in the heart of a man and a society apart from the redemptive work of Jesus. Men's hearts love darkness and live with blind eyes regarding the truth of their need for a healer of their blind condition.
It is unfortunate that millions live in darkness, spiritually blind and void of the ability to see the light of day, that is Jesus. Yet during this season, you and I have been given a tremendous opportunity to live out the light of who Jesus is by loving, giving and extending ourselves to those who live blindly without him.
May he use each of us to be gifts of light and healing to the blind around us. Lord Jesus, we pray that you would open the eyes of hearts this season so that many may see and believe you are their Savior sent for their salvation.
Peace
