The National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NBCCF) will be holdi ng their Annual Advocacy Training Conference and Lobby Day on April 30- May 3 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, VA near Washington, DC.
At the conference, advocates will learn about the latest science, politics, and other hot topics pertinent to the breast cancer community. On May 3, we will put that new-found knowledge to work on Capitol Hill, lobbying our Ohio and Kentucky legislators regarding NBCCF's legislative priorities. www.stopbreastcancer.org Each year the BCA offers scholarships to attend this conference. On behalf of the members of the BCA, we want to THANK Linda for all that she has done. Linda has been crucial in affecting policies and legislation that has improved the lives of women in our state battling breast cancer. Our thoughts and prayers are with Linda.

Thank you for Recent Fundraisers! Brighton Collectibles Last October, Brighton Collectibles at the Kenwood Towne Center sold a breast cancer themed bracelet with proceeds going to the BCA. Over $1900 was raised. We thank all of those at Brighton Collectibles for this very generous donation! Have a Heart The second annual event called Have a Heart was held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Molloy's on the Green. The evening combined music, dancing, silent auctions and raffles that raised over $3600 for the BCA. We thank the members of the bands Judging Smails and Gil's Variety Store for donating their time and talent. And a very big thank you to Jeff Hansee and Donna Hansee and their committee for working so hard to make this such a successful event! Choirs Unite to 'Sing for a Cause' The choral departments of Lakota West High School, Sycamore High School and Taylor High School came together to "Sing for a Cause" on Saturday, February, 26. "We've never really heard of any high school choirs combining to do something like this," said Bret Albright, choral director at Taylor in North Bend. "You have these three schools that typically don't interact with each other from very different parts of the city coming together." The performance raised over $3,000 for the Breast Cancer Alliance of Greater Cincinnati and the Alzheimer's Association of Cincinnati. Each choir performed individually for about 15 minutes, then all three choirs - more than 100 students total, came together with an orchestra comprised of musicians ranging from high school to professional to perform Gabriel Faure's choral masterpiece, Requiem. "It's such a great education for these students," Albright said. "Not only are they getting to sing a choral work that's so steeped in music history, but they're also learning a lesson that you can use your talents to make a difference. I think that's a really fantastic lesson for high schoolers to learn." Back to Top |

What to Know: ASCO's Guideline on Bone-Modifying Drugs for Breast Cancer
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) developed evidence-based recommendations for using drugs, called bone-modifying drugs, for advanced breast cancer that has spread to the bone to help prevent bone-related problems. In 2011, this guideline was updated based on results from clinical trials of these drugs, including new information about a possible condition experienced by some people taking bone-modifying drugs. It also includes a new drug, denosumab (Xgeva), which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This guide for patients is based on ASCO's most recent recommendations.
Key Messages
- Bone-modifying drugs are used to help prevent bone problems for people with breast cancer that has spread to the bones.
- The bone-modifying drugs used in the United States for breast cancer that has spread to the bone are pamidronate (Aredia), zoledronic acid (Zometa), and denosumab; talk with your doctor about the benefits and risks of each drug.
- Bone-modifying drugs are associated with an uncommon but possibly serious side effect called osteonecrosis of the jaw.
