NBCC LogoNBCCF Annual Advocacy Training Conference

This year, the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NBCCF) will be holding their Annual Advocacy Training Conference on April 30- May 3 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City near Washington, DC.  For those of you who are not familiar with the conference, it is a three-day training conference that covers the latest science, politics, and other hot topics pertinent to the breast cancer community.  Advocates will learn the most effective advocacy strategies and how to influence those making decisions about how research dollars are spent.  It's also a great place to network with other advocates.  The fourth day in DC is spent by putting that new-found knowledge to work on Capitol Hill, lobbying our Ohio and Kentucky legislators regarding NBCCF's legislative priorities.

Each year in January, the BCA sends out a letter to its members, offering them a chance to apply for a scholarship to attend the conference. Anyone wanting to join the fight to eradicate breast cancer should consider attending this valuable conference.  If you have any questions about the conference, please feel free to e-mail us at info@bcacincy.org

In Memory of Dana Lynn Siegel

Dana Lynn Siegel

The BCA lost one of our dear friends a few months ago. Dana Lynn Siegel passed away in November 2010 at the age of 65.

Dana will be remembered for her positive spirit, boundless energy and warm smile. Dana assisted the BCA by serving on the Board of Directors, as a committee member for the  annual survivorship celebration, and was instrumental in reviving the Breast Cancer Alliance's Wall of Hope. This photo of Dana was featured on the Wall of Hope. The photo included the following quote, "I did not have control over what was happening to me, but I did have control over how I let it affect my life."

A wonderful article was written about Dana in Cincy Chic last September. This article really sums up what a strong woman Dana was.

Last month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified healthcare professionals and patients that it is recommending removing the breast cancer indication for Avastin (bevacizumab) because the drug has not been shown to be safe and effective for that use.

The FDA has made this decision after reviewing the results of four clinical studies of Avastin in women with breast cancer that show no improvement in overall survival and insufficient benefit in slowing disease progression to outweigh the significant risks to patients.

The drug itself is not being removed from the market and this action will not have any immediate impact on its use in treating breast cancer. This action by the FDA will not affect the approvals for colon, kidney, brain, and lung cancers.
