How Will Health Care Reform Impact Breast Cancer Survivors?
Last March, the health care reform bill was signed into law. The BCA thanks those in Congress who supported this bill as breast cancer survivors in our community will benefit from many of the changes included in this reform.
The new health care reform law provides vital new protections - no longer will women with breast cancer be faced with lifetime and annual caps on their insurance coverage; the threat of their insurance policy being canceled when they need it most; or discrimination based on their gender, health status or whether they choose to participate in a clinical trial.
It also provides new health insurance options - already a Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) is available in every state for those who have been denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition such as breast cancer. In September, coverage for children up to age 26 under their parent's insurance plans will be available; and soon, a more affordable, understandable health insurance marketplace will be available with a range of health insurance options for individuals and small businesses. In addition, the law ensures educated patients and consumers will have a voice throughout the implementation process, and promises improvement in the quality of care and outcomes for all patients.

Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Centers (BCERC) Update
Since 2003, the BCA has partnered with researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) in a research study looking at the potential links between the environment and breast cancer. Specifically this research explored how the mammary gland develops and factors that may influence development. The BCA has reported research findings to our membership over the years via newsletters and forums. The funding for this seven-year grant ended this summer.
We are pleased to announce the CCHMC was awarded a five-year grant to continue the work that was started in 2003. Now called The Puberty Study, the Principle Investigator, Dr. Frank Biro from CCHMC, will again collaborate with researchers from Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. These researchers will be part of a new network called the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program (BCERP). Gail Greenburg and Peggy Monroe will serve as advocate representatives who will coordinate outreach activities in our community. The BCA will continue to share research results from these studies with our membership as we have done over the past years.
Recently, Dr. Biro published new research that girls are starting puberty earlier than in the past. This finding is important because other research has established a link between an earlier age of a girl's first menstrual period and an increased risk of breast cancer in adult life. Hot Topic
FDA advisory committee votes to revoke approval of bevacizumab (AvastinŽ) for metastatic breast cancer patients.
Last month, the Food and Drug Administration"s (FDA) Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee (ODAC) voted 12 to 1 to recommend that the FDA revoke the approval of bevacizumab (AvastinŽ) as a first-line treatment for HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer.
Committee members argued that while the drug has been shown to increase progression-free survival (PFS), it has not been shown to increase overall survival (OS) in this patient population and is associated with increased toxicity. ODAC voted that the results of the AVADO and RIBBON 1 trials did not confirm the magnitude of meaningful clinical benefit as shown in the earlier E2100 study results. The panel voted to remove the indication of bevacizumab for breast cancer.
