Dear Friend of the BCA,
The Board of Directors of the Breast Cancer Alliance of Greater Cincinnati
(BCA) want to wish you and your family a very special holiday season. At this
time of year we reflect back and thank those who have donated their time and
talent to help the BCA with the work that we do in our community. We also
remember those who we lost in 2009 to this terrible disease such as Sarah
Mayfield, one of the founding members of the BCA.

Mammography Screenings
Last
month, the US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) announced updated
guidelines for screening mammography and Self Breast Exams (SBE). This
announcement came as a surprise to many. There has been confusion, anger
and misinformation surrounding this announcement. The USPSTF has since
acknowledged their timing was unfortunate, and that they did a poor job of
communicating their recommendations. This has resulted in an update of
their web site to include a message for women to consult with their doctors
about what is right for each individual. We encourage you to visit the
USPSTF web site at http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/uspstf/uspsbrca.htm
to read these recommendations. For the rationale behind the guidelines,
we recommend that you visit the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) web
site at www.stopbreastcancer.org.

NBCCF
Annual Advocacy Training Conference
This year, the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NBCCF) will be holding
their Annual Advocacy Training Conference on May 22-25 at the Renaissance
Wa shington Hotel in Washington, DC. For those of you who are not familiar
with the conference, it is a three day training conference that covers the
latest science, politics, and other hot topics pertinent to the breast cancer
community. Advocates will learn the most effective advocacy strategies
and how to influence those making decisions about how research dollars are
spent. It's also a great place to network with other advocates. The
fourth day in DC is spent by putting that new-found knowledge to work on Capitol
Hill, lobbying our Ohio legislators regarding NBCCF's legislative priorities.
Every year in January, the BCA sends out a letter to its members, offering them
a chance to apply for a scholarship to attend the conference. Look for an
e-mail alert about the conference coming up soon! Anyone wanting to join
the fight to eradicate breast cancer should consider attending this valuable
conference. If you have any questions about the conference, please feel
free to e-mail our NBCC Volunteer Lead Field Coordinator for Ohio and the BCA's
Advocacy Chairperson, Linda Croucher, info@bcacincy.org

Cincinnati Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Center (BCERC)
Click Here to See What The Survey Says.....
Thank
you to over 170 BCA members who took the time to complete the survey that was
sent to you in August regarding our collaboration with the Cincinnati BCERC.
The survey highlights are attached via poster format. BCA members Kathy Ball
and Ann Hernick presented this poster at the 6th Annual Meeting of the
BCERCs last month in San Francisco. Evaluation Services Center at
the University of Cincinnati will be completing a report this month on the
survey results, interviews and focus groups. This information will be published
in a peer-review manuscript.
The feedback that we learned from you helped us to work with local researchers
on plans for the next wave of funding.
BCA Board Approves to Support Continued Funding:
The Request for Applications (RFA) for the next wave of funding for the BCERCs
is due later this month. The BCA has written a letter of support to Frank Biro,
MD from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center on his application to
continue the research cohort called Growing Up Female: Environmental Factors in
Female Disease and Development. This study began in 2003 and the funding would
continue to follow this cohort of young girls for the next five years. The BCA
always needs volunteers to help with this research. Please contact us at info@bcacincy.org to learn more about how
you can help.
Save the Date: for the 6th Annual Educational Forum Looking Upstream for
Environmental Links to Breast Cancer to be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at
the Genome Research Institute on 2180 E. Galbraith Rd. from 8:00am-12:30pm. The

The
National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) Information Campaign
Those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer often feel overwhelmed
and powerless when it comes to questions they have about the disease. The
NBCC has launched a new web site designed to provide individuals with the
information that they need to make informed decisions about their health. The
site uses the principles of evidenced based medicine to discuss topics such as:
Screening and risk
New diagnosis
Treatment and more
Cancer recurrence
Quality of life
The
web site encourages you to learn the facts. Know the evidence. Become an
advocate.
Visit www.KnowBreastCancer.org
today!
October is known as breast cancer awareness month. This past October the NBCC
provided 31 Myths and Truths about breast cancer for each of the 31 days in
October. As you know, breast cancer is a disease that affects individuals every
day of the year, not just during the month of October. We encourage you to read
each of the 31 Myths and Truths by going to
www.stopbreastcancer.org
Here are two examples:
Truth #5: Breast cancer mortality rates are declining.
TRUE. Breast cancer death rates changed little between 1930 and 1990, but
decreased 27% from 1990 to 2005.
Myth #9: Men don't get breast cancer.
FALSE. It is estimated that in 2009, 1,910 cases of breast cancer will be
diagnosed in men.
