BCA Hosts Advocate Research Training Event and Launches Monthly Journal Club
On October 4, the BCA hosted its second training event for advocates who are interested in research. Linda Vincent, MPH, led a six-hour workshop, teaching advocates how to evaluate research in published medical journals. Charles Kishman, a librarian from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, taught advocates how to access peer reviewed journals online.
Advocate Research Training (ART) was developed after the BCA received a Best Practices award in 2006 from the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund for its Advocates Working in Research Program. Members of the BCA wanted to develop training opportunities for advocates to advance their learning in the science of breast cancer. The first session was held in 2007.
As a follow-up to ART training, the BCA is launching a Journal Club, with advocates evaluating and discussing one article per month online. All are welcome to join the Journal Club, even if you haven't attended the ART training. For more information contact Ann Hernick at bcacincy@yahoo.com. |
Join the Movement to Go Beyond a Cure
NBCC has joined the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and the Avon Foundation in their efforts to recruit one million women to partner with breast cancer researchers to find the causes of breast cancer. Women of all ages, whether they have had breast cancer or not, are being recruited for the Love/Avon Army of Women, to participate in studies aimed at understanding the causes of breast cancer and how to prevent it. Over 200,000 women have already signed up. Once you join, you will receive emails about new studies you may qualify for, and you can choose whether to participate. The award will be presented at our 14th Survivorship Celebration on April 18th, 2009. The criteria for the award are:
1. The honoree is a breast cancer survivor or advocate who has made an outstanding contribution to the prevention, detection or treatment of breast cancer through advocay, education or communication.
2. The honoree inspires others to choose a pro-active and positive stance in survivorship. In 100-500 words let us know why you feel this person is deserving of this award.
