| $12 Million Increase in Funding for DOD Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP)
This week, Congress passed a continuing resolution that includes a Defense Appropriations bill for FY 2009 providing $150 million for the DOD BCRP. This is the exact amount the BCA and NBCC advocates had been asking for and represents a $12 million increase from FY 2008. The budget bill has been sent to the White House and the President is expected to sign.

| NBCC Disappointed with Changes Made to Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act
After nearly a decade of fighting to pass the BCERA, advocates are disappointed to learn that the bill has been significantly altered in a House subcommittee. The legislation that was designed to create an innovative approach to examining the links between breast cancer and the environment, no longer meets the original basic goals.
"We had thought that a bill with 286 bipartisan House cosponsors, and with both sides of the aisle publicly praising the Senate HELP-passed version, could have resulted in an agreement that maintained the core principles of that legislation," writes Fran Visco, NBCC president. | Taking Care of Our Daughters
The daughters of women who have experienced breast cancer have extra anxieties when they experience puberty and changes to their bodies. We now have some new resources to help our daughters through this rocky period. Dr. Marisa Weiss, the founder of breastcancer.org, and her daughter Isabel Friedman, have written a book, launched a website designed for girls, and have taken to the road giving presentations at high schools around the country. The book, Taking Care of Your Girls, helps calm girls' fears about breast cancer, but also arms them with appropriate information and steps they can take for good breast health. The book can be ordered from Amazon.com. The website for girls is www.takingcareofyourgirls.com.

Bikers enjoyed a three hour tour from Mason to Cowan Lake and back, and were treated to a delicious spread of hot food when they returned. Planning for the 3rd Annual Ride will begin in February, 2009 and new volunteers are needed and welcome. If you are interested please contact the BCA at bcacincy@yahoo.com. |
| Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness
The issues and realities for those with metastatic breast cancer are often overlooked during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Several cities and states across the country have declared October 13 as Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Should we ask Governor Strickland for an Ohio proclamation? Send your thoughts to bcaciny@yahoo.com For more information and for a link to resources on metastatic breast cancer check out the Metastatic Breast Cancer Network. |
