  Artist in Residence
Walden was fortunate to have received a grant from The Kentucky Arts Council.  It gave the 5th and 6th grade students the opportunity to work with Judy Sizemore, a published author, freelance writer and poet. She is the author of several resource guides for integrating creative writing resources across the curriculum.
For one week, in their Language Arts classrooms, the students worked on a Community Heritage Writing Project. They were able to research their own families and communities, write in diverse genres and publish a book on community heritage.  This tied in with Walden's theme this year, Walden Explores a Diverse and Changing World.
The project was a success. The students gained insight into aspects of their own family heritages through talking with parents, and in many cases, conducting interviews with out-of-town relatives. Judy Sizemore walked them through the process of conducting an interview and then organizing the information for the purpose of composing an essay.  The students brought in family pictures, recipes, and newspaper articles, as well as objects that had been passed down in their families. They learned how to insert pictures into the text and feature quotations and excerpts for effect.  The students were engaged for the entire period of time. The project culminated with a published book that contains writing from each student.  The students will each receive a copy of their published book, which will give them the opportunity to enjoy their peers' heritage writing and to reflect on the process.
We feel very fortunate to have met and worked with Judy Sizemore, our Artist in Residence.

Thank you to:  Janice Brennan, Sheila Haney, Jennifer Lichtefeld, and Charlotte Sorensson for all of their long hard work binding the books for the students!!

LISC Dance - Walden is hosting the school year's final dance on Friday, April 16, 2010, from 7-10 PM.  Admission is $5.  Walden students in grades 5 through 8 are invited.  See handbook for appropriate dress code.  PARENT CHAPERONES NEEDED; please contact Mrs. Elder ASAP if you are available to help - melder@walden-school.org

Achievement Testing
Next week, the Middle School will be taking sections of the Stanford Achievement Test each morning (Monday through Thursday).  During this week, please see that your child gets a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast.  Please also make sure your child comes to class with a #2 pencil.  It is extremely important that students are on time to school and absent only if absolutely necessary.  Depending on scheduling logistics and the priority/importance of missed subtests, some tests will not be made up due to absences.  There will be little or no homework assigned during test week.  In order to provide a positive testing environment with minimum disruption, students will have brief breaks (to stretch) in between tests and will have regular breaks (with snacks) after daily testing is completed.

8th Grade Pictures
We need 2 pictures of each 8th grader for the end-of-the year slide show. One baby picture and one current picture needs to be sent to Mrs. Fitts. If you use hard copy pictures please put them in a plastic bag with the students name on them or email Mrs. Fitts - lfitts@walden-school.org - digital pictures. Please have these to in by April 30.

Swim Clinic
Walden held a swim clinic open to Grades 3-12 last week. Students who participated received instruction on all four competitive strokes. An intramural swim meet was held on Friday. Congratulations to all the swimmers who worked hard to improve their competitive techniques. Check out the website (Walden Happenings) for pictures!

Middle School Book Club - On Tuesday, April 13, students will meet to discuss the book Scat, by Carl Hiaasen, during their lunch period.  Students are encouraged to join by signing up with Mrs. Sewell in the Library or in their Language Arts classrooms.  Pizza will be provided during the book discussion, and copies of the book will be available at the book fair, at the discounted price of $10.

A Compliment for our 7th Grade!
Email received on 3/26/10 after field trip to the Speed Museum:

Dear Ms. Elder,
Please pass along my regards and my appreciation for the students who were at
the Speed Museum yesterday.  All of the young people in my group were so
engaged, articulate and informed that it was a real pleasure to spend time with
them.  There was no juvenile snickering around works of art that displayed the
human form.  Their questions and comments were more insightful than I sometimes
get from adult groups.  I think that my group contained some potential docents!
     Again, thanks and best wishes!
Peace,
Rob
