Congratulations to Will Mandrola, Walden Middle School's National Geographic Geography Bee winner.  Congratulations also to our second place winner, Alec Diaz, and to our third place winner, Eric Elder, as well as to all of the grade-level winners who participated:  Izzy Geller, Erik Sorensson, Henry Mankowski, Brian Brennan, and Julia Mellen.  Will will take a written exam this week to determine eligibility to compete in the state-level competition on April 9, 2010.  Will qualified for the state bee last year, and if he qualifies again (scores in the top 100 state-wide), this will be the tenth time in the last twelve years that Walden Middle School will be represented in the state bee.  Good luck Will, we are very proud of you!

Congratulations to the following 5th graders who qualified to participate in the Duke University Talent Identification Program:  Shannon Archibald, William Brennan, Nick Christensen, Nathan Cohen, Isabelle Geller, Sarah Haney, Kaizad Joshi, Tina King, Sam Langford, Jacob Lichtefeld,

A Path Not Crossed

By: Zac Pedley (6th grade LA)

Two paths went across a river

One made of stones and foreboding

In proportions just a sliver

The sight of it made me shiver

And it looked incomplete...Loading

The other arched

And finished at the other bank

To there I marched

My mouth was dry and I was parched

The forger of the path made it so amazing, him I had to thank

Then against my will my body turned

I started crossing and found it quite strange

To the first path I've returned

And to look back I turned

Only to see that from my stone to the bank there was a huge range

As I reached the other side

I smiled

My eyes turned wide

There were flowers by my side

I knew the land should never be touched by man so I returned

Operation Parent Begins Soon (from WPA)
Operation Parent (formally Operation Spirit) is a non-profit organization which helps provide parents the tools to assist in raising incredible teens.  Walden School will be conducting Parenting 101 classes in January and February.  There is little information available on raising teenagers (especially compared to the toddler and early development years).  Our children are still learning and developing into adults and these classes are designed to keep parents informed in a changing world.  The classes consist of a series of four two-hour classes that include information via video, group discussions, a handbook and more.  Please look for complete information about the classes and registration this week.

Classes will be held Thursday mornings from 8a-10a at Walden for four consecutive weeks starting on January 21.  A Tuesday evening session may be held depending on the number of registrants for the session. Registration fee is $80 which includes your handbook and audio CDs of the video discussion points to share with your spouse or family.  You may register online at www.operationspirit.org.  Any questions may be directed to Shelley Kinslow at ckinslow@insightbb.com or 419-2812.

Edline is an on-line program which permits parents to view their student's grades (with itemized assignment lists), which are regularly posted by their subject-area teachers.  In order to access your child's grades, you need to register.  Information is sent home each fall to new middle school parents.  Parents only need to register once (for 4 years of MS).  Parents who have formerly registered for an Edline account should use their original user name and password.  If you have misplaced that information and/or need assistance setting up your account, please email Mr. Raymond at:  craymond@walden-school.org.
Please note that teachers regularly send email grades, personal memos, and missing assignment lists to parents via Edline and assume that parents have accounts.  Please let your child's teachers know to communicate via mail if Edline is not an option for you.

Walden School's International Theme - Check out Mr. Kimbrough's weekly Geoquiz question.  Mr. Kimbrough is one of our high school social studies teachers, and at each Monday morning assembly this year, he will present a geography question, which students can research and email their answer by 1:00 PM on Friday.  All students who answer correctly will be eligible to have their name placed in a random drawing to receive a special t-shirt commemorating this year's international theme.  Here's the link to check out this week's question:
