November 22

Kentucky Youth Assembly
On November 22nd through 24th, Charles Bowles, Wilson Boyer, Sabelo Tsambo, and Benjamin Haney will represent Walden at the 63rd annual Kentucky Youth Assembly.  KYA is a Youth in Government program designed to provide hands-on experience in the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of government. The overall goal of the conference is to teach the mechanics of government and to impress upon students the importance of active participation to the success of a democracy.  Our Wolverines have crafted two bills to send to the Youth Assembly for consideration.  Charles, as a senior and member of KYA's congressional assembly, will argue for an amendment to the Chapter 13 bankruptcy law.  He wants the bankruptcy law change to allow the court to be able restructure home loans.  Charles' bill will make it easier for someone going through Chapter 13 bankruptcy to keep their home.  Wilson, Sabelo and Ben, representing Walden at KYA's state legislator, want to make it a state law that a driver must have his or her vehicle's headlights on during inclement weather. They feel that road safety will increase with headlights no matter what time of day.  Part of the conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (airport), but the real treat will come when the students are driven to our Commonwealth's capitol in Frankfort.  There they will learn the art of politics in the same seats as our senators and congressmen and women sit!  Good luck to Charles, Wilson, Sabelo and Ben!

Academic World Quest

Academic World Quest
Walden High School is proud to announce our participation in a new academic competition.  On Monday, November 16th (3:45pm-5:30) Walden High School will hold its first Annual Walden Academic World Quest. World Quest tests the knowledge of students on social studies and internationally related questions. Through the use of a PowerPoint presentation, students will be asked eight rounds of questions with each round consisting of ten questions.  Unlike quick recall, each student is given the opportunity to answer each question. Students are graded on the number of questions they answer correctly.  The questions range from current events and newsmakers through geography and cultures.  The categories this year are the following: Current Events;  Great Decisions 2009 (Rising Powers; Afghanistan & Pakistan; Energy & the U.S. Economy; Arctic; Egypt; Food Crisis; Rights ); Pandemics ; Genocide; International Migration Trends; Food Production and Consumption; World Music; and the World Cup.  The Top four students will form a team to represent Walden at the 2010 Kentucky and Southern Indiana Academic World Quest held on Saturday, February 27th at Bellarmine University.  The winning team from that competition will move on to the national competition held in Washington D.C.  This event is open to all interested students.  Study packets are now available from Mr. Kimbrough.
All are welcome to come cheer the students as they compete on Nov. 19th.  In addition to the competition an international snack buffet will be open before the competition from 3:15 to 3:45.

Important Hand Book Changes

Tardiness To School

A student who reports to school any time after 8:00 am is considered tardy to school. The student must sign in at the office, indicating time of arrival and obtain an admit slip which should be submitted to the appropriate teacher. On the third tardy to school, the student will receive detention. Each subsequent tardy will result in one hour detentions and a parent conference to formulate a plan to address the habitual tardiness.  Tardy count begins at the start of each quarter.

Tardiness to Class

Every three tardies to class will result in a detention. A student more than ten minutes late to class (unexcused) will be recorded as absence from class (a "cut") and will receive zeros on any work due that day; and are subject to additional discipline.

Sponsor a Flag
In support of our theme this year, we are trying to festoon the school with flags from around the world.  If you would like to sponsor a flag, please see Mrs. Frey in the office and let her know  the country you would like to sponsor.  Sponsorships are $50.  The flags will be ordered from a local flag company and they will be displayed around the school.  Sponsors will have their names posted in the Tucker Assembly Hall, along with the country they have selected.  Selection will be on a first come first served basis.

How To Sponsor a Flag:
Print  out this form and bring it with your $50 check to Mrs. Frey in the school office.
