Mrs. Anderson's fourth graders tackle a "Mission Possible" activity. Today's lesson challenged students to build structures to stand up against weight and gravity. Experimenting with different shapes and patterns, students soon realized that triangles rule when it comes to structural integrity.

LAST MINUTE SLOWPOKE FARM INFO FOR K-2 FAMILIES

Monday is our K-2 field trip to Slowpoke Farms.

  • Please bring your child to school at the regular time Monday morning. Students will go to their homeroom at the usual time. Parents should stay in Tucker Hall for the chaperone meeting.

  • There will be a brief chaperone meeting in Tucker Hall at 9:00 a.m.

  • If you are planning to drive your child home from Slowpoke Farms, you must let your child's teacher know so we have an accurate bus count for the return trip.

  • If you are planning to drive another child home, that child's parent should write a note to the office or teacher granting you permission. Cell-phone permission will be honored, but it is not preferred nor encouraged. We cannot allow parents to drive other children home without permission.

  • A hot dog/chip/cupcake lunch will be provided at Slowpoke Farm. We cannot vouch for their preparedness to deal with cross-contamination, food allergies or your child's food preferences. If this is a concern, we encourage you to send a lunch along with your child. Adults may bring their own lunch or indulge in hot dogs, chips and cookies.

  • We plan on returning to school by 2:15 -in time for carpool. Children who go straight home will not miss academic work.

  • As of noon today, it looked like rain is not going to be a factor. Please monitor the weather and have your child dress accordingly. "Kicking around" shoes only!

"THE CHANGING FACE OF PARENTING"

Wednesday, November 4
8:00 a.m.

Our generation of parents faces challenges previous generations could never even imagine. As the Internet and emerging technologies continue to dictate our culture, the only thing we can be sure of is that our children's world will be very different from ours.

·        How do we face the challenges of raising children to thrive and contribute to an unpredictable future?
·        The importance of establishing and upholding our own philosophies.
·        What issues do our kids face today that we never did?
·        How do we assure that our children are competitive and savvy yet still enjoy childhood?

Please join us here at Walden School on Wednesday, November 4 at 8:00 a.m. for a discussion on these issues, how we are reacting as parents, and how our school's Mission works to address these concerns.

No RSVP required. Please call if you have any questions.

 Spotlight On... Miss. Laspiur

Diane Laspiur

Mrs. Laspiur is just beginning her first year with us here at Walden, but she has been teaching for many years. In addition to being a Walden parent, her husband teaches high school Spanish at Mercy Academy.

So far...
"I am a native of Louisville.  After living many places, including Argentina, Brazil and New York, my husband and I decided Louisville was a great place to raise our children, and I returned.  I have been a teacher for 21 years.  For most of those years, I was an upper elementary teacher of all subjects."

Why Walden?
"My children attend Walden in grades K and 1.  I fell in love with the school first as a parent, and when the opportunity  to teach Spanish here presented itself, I did not hesitate to join the Walden family as a member of the faculty."

Favorites...
"As a special area teacher, I enjoy working with children of many different ages.  It keeps things interesting, and allows me to explore my subject on different levels.  Learning to speak Spanish is a personal accomplishment I am very proud of.  I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for the language with children.  As my students become more proficient  in Spanish, I experience that sense of pride and excitement I felt as I learned the language.  I believe having acquired the skill as an adult gives me a unique perspective on how the children feel as they practice and learn Spanish."

Secrets...
I love to sing
I am a University of Kentucky fanatic
I am an avid reader.  I enjoy books, magazines, the newspaper, anything in print.  The Harry Potter Series was a personal favorite

If?
"In high school I wanted to be either a lawyer or a teacher.  After living with a close friend while she attended law school for four years, I was extremely grateful for the choice I made.  I have never doubted that this is the right profession for me!"
