Faculty Focus: Sharon Weis
Sharon Weis has been with Walden School for 9 years. This summer she was invited to serve on the faculty of the Kentucky Governor School for the Arts, (GSA) teaching Painting and Drawing to 29 students selected in Visual Arts. For those not familiar with GSA it is the art equivalent of the Governors Scholar Program. There are nine disciplines taught at the Governors School for the Arts- Architecture, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, New Media, and Visual Art and Voice. Students are chosen through a highly selective process, a total of 230 plus students are selected from across the state of Kentucky to study for 3 weeks at Transylvania University in June in the discipline they excel. Besides her academic training, excellence in teaching both here at Walden and on the faculty of Governor School for the Arts, Ms Weis also continues her own creative work as an artist. She calls her work "representational painting" and focuses on the human form and portraits. She will be having a showing of original work at the Zephyr Gallery from October 2-Nov 14. Go to www.zephyrgallery.org for more information. She notes that many of the works in this show are rich in patterns. This passion for patterns was the result of her recent trip to Egypt to visit her daughter, where she was inspired by the variety and vividness of their patterns. Ms Weis has a horticulture degree from Murray State University and after working in botanical gardens for some time she returned to the University of Louisville to pursue her art degree. She said she has always been creative, and teaching art and pursuing her own painting allows her to fulfill her creative impulses.

Conference Time
Is Here Again!
Please call Mrs. Frey to make an appointment for Parent/Teachers conferences. For those new to the high school conference process, it works as follows: You call Mrs. Frey and schedule an appointment for Friday, Oct 30 from 8:00-3:40 - they are 15 minutes long. These are not student led as in middle school, so students need not attend. When you come for your conference you will meet in the college counseling room with all the teachers that your student currently has for class. They will give you feed back on your students' progress and give you the opportunity to ask questions.
Slots are limited for Conference Day, so make your appointment today!

All High School Retreat and Road Show!
SUCCESS!
This was our first High School Retreat and Road Show. We spent three days at Bradford Woods - holding classes, having class and club meetings, and attending seminars on special topics, such as Economics, Constitution, and Thoreau, and discussions of our Summer Reading Book: A Walk in My World. Besides the purely academic schedule, we were led by the staff at Bradford Woods in a variety of activities designed to facilitate group co-hesion and testing our personal comfort zones. Among these were the Alpine Tower and Trust Fall.

Tardiness To School A student who reports to school any time after 8:00 am is considered tardy to school. The student must sign in at the office, indicating time of arrival and obtain an admit slip which should be submitted to the appropriate teacher. On the third tardy to school, the student will receive detention. Each subsequent tardy will result in one hour detentions and a parent conference to formulate a plan to address the habitual tardiness. Tardy count begins at the start of each quarter. Tardiness to Class Every three tardies to class will result in a detention. A student more than ten minutes late to class (unexcused) will be recorded as absence from class (a "cut") and will receive zeros on any work due that day; and are subject to additional discipline. |
