Edline
Edline  is an on-line program which permits parents to view their student's grades (with itemized assignment lists), which are regularly posted by their subject-area teachers.  In order to access your child's grades, you need to register.
Information is sent home each fall to new middle school parents.  Parents only need to register once (for 4 years of MS).  Parents who have formerly registered for an Edline account should use their original user name and password.  If you have misplaced that information and/or need assistence setting up your account, please email Mr. Raymond at:  craymond@walden-school.org.
Please note that teachers regularly send email grades, personal memos, and missing assignment lists to parents via Edline and assume that parents have accounts.  Please let your child's teachers know to communicate via mail if Edline is not an option for you.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR FACULTY - see this issue's focus on Mrs. Weis below.

Conferences - Please call Mrs. Frey in the office, 893-0433, to schedule an appointment.  Parents have two options:  either schedule a student-led conference for Thursday evening (10/29), or schedule a meeting specifically with your child's homeroom teacher for Friday morning (10/30).
Thursday evening's student-led conferences allow students to share with their parents their academic goals and self-assessments, as well as representative class-work samples.  Parents sit with their child and a teacher facilitator for the first 15 minutes of the session, and then are free to talk to the rest of the student's teachers in an informal setting for the second 15 minutes.  The goal is to reinforce student ownership of their education.
Friday morning parent-teacher conferences provide an opportunity to talk about your child with the homeroom teacher, for parents who are more comfortable with a more traditional format.  If you choose this format, you can decide whether to include your child or not.  It is recommended that you bring current Edline progress reports with you (homeroom teachers do not have easy access to all of your child's Edline reports).
Please select only one conference option at this time.  As always, parents are welcome to set up appointments as needed to see teachers whenever they have a concern, and it is best to make that request via email directly to the teacher.

Please join the WPA on Tuesday, October 27, from 4-5 PM, for program by Rick Wormeli, to learn about brain development and children (with practical applications).  CHILDCARE PROVIDED!  Please email Stacy Nickle at stacynickle@yahoo.com or call her at 897-9103, to reserve a spot for your child(ren).

Red Ribbon Week, October 26-29
Thousands of schools participate in National Red Ribbon Week, which was established years ago in response to the tragic 1985 murder of a General Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who was investigating Mexican drug traffickers at the time of his death. Angry parent groups and other citizens began wearing red ribbons to take a public stand against the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs to show their support for drug-free youth.  Here at Walden we want to take this opportunity to renew our commitment to a healthy and drug-free lifestyle and show our dedication to education and drug prevention efforts in our school and community. Please help us in this effort by encouraging your student to participate in our daily activities this week.
Monday, October 26th   - Homeroom teachers will pass out RED RIBBONS and safety pins to each student. The students should wear red to school that day and their ribbons daily.
Tuesday, October 27th - Use your head, don't do drugs.  Wear a hat day.
Wednesday, October 28th - Instead of doing drugs, wear red again.
Thursday, October 29th - Life is a party without drugs; wear pajamas to school.
Thank you for all your help and cooperation to make Red Ribbon Week a huge success.

Our art teacher, Sharon Weis, had an art opening entitled, Interstitial, last month at Zephyr Gallery, at 610 E Market Street.  Her paintings will be on display
until November 6th.
Sharon Weis has taught grades 6-12 art at Walden School for nine years.  Last summer, Mrs. Weis was invited to serve on the faculty of the Kentucky Governor School for the Arts, (GSA) to teach painting and drawing, at Transylvania University.    Besides her academic training and excellence in teaching both here at Walden and on the faculty of Governor School for the Arts, Mrs. Weis also continues her own creative work as an artist.  She calls her work "representational painting" and focuses on the human form and portraits.  She notes that many of the works in her current show are rich in patterns.  This passion for patterns was the result of her recent trip to Egypt to visit her daughter, where she was inspired by the variety and vividness of their patterns.  Mrs. Weis has a horticulture degree from Murray State University, and after working in botanical gardens for some time she returned to the University of Louisville to pursue her art degree.  Mrs. Weis feels that she has always been creative, and teaching art and pursuing her own painting allows her to fulfill her creative impulses.

Last week students enjoyed a program of visiting Buddhist monks, who live in exile from Tibet in southern India and visit Louisville every few years to share their customs and ceremonies, and teach about their culture.  Thank you to the Boarders family for helping to make this program possible.

Walden is starting a choir, for students in Grade 4 and up and you are invited to join!  The choir will meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:15 am to 7:50 pm.  Walden Children's Choir will be developing the student's voice to sing age-appropriate music, focusing on part-singing and harmonization.  Contact Ms. Bonacum or Mrs. Pusateri for more information.

Walden School's International Theme - Check out Mr. Kimbrough's weekly Geoquiz question.  Mr. Kimbrough is one of our high school social studies teachers, and at each Monday morning assembly this year, he will present a geography question, which students can research and email their answer by 1:00 PM on Friday.  All students who answer correctly will be eligible to have their name placed in a random drawing to receive a special t-shirt commemorating this year's international theme.  Here's the link to check out this week's question:  www.walden-school.org/display_pagecontent.php?id=1117
